Right then, let's get into it. Saturday racing and we've got runners spread across Eagle Farm, Randwick and the Gold Coast, so there's plenty to keep an eye on. Some of these are genuinely exciting prospects, a couple are in tough spots, and one has had us talking all week. We'll take them in order, call it straight, and by the end you'll know exactly where our head is at and, more importantly, where the real interest lies. Grab a coffee. Let's go.

First up at Eagle Farm in Race 1 we've got Cabaletto going around at 1000 metres, and look, there's no sugarcoating this one. It is a red-hot speed race and that is just about the worst possible scenario for her. The tempo figures to be absolutely scorching from the jump, and she needs things to fall perfectly into place to be a factor late. We'll be cheering her on because that's what you do, but the betting enthusiasm here sits somewhere between low and completely missing in action. Each-way confidence is a 3 out of 10, and that's being generous.

Over at Randwick, Race 1 features Caltsar resuming at 1400 metres, and while that is his best trip on paper, you'd really want him a lot sharper going into it than his trials have suggested. The trials have been fair at best, and in a race this deep, fair probably doesn't cut it. The soft barrier is a genuine positive and we're not writing him off entirely, but he likely needs to find another three to five lengths on what we've seen. That's not impossible. It's just not something you'd want to bet the house on either. Each-way confidence is a 3 out of 10.

Now, Race 3 at Eagle Farm brings us Chillaxing, and this bloke is a genuinely interesting story. Two wins from three starts, purchased cheaply from overseas, and he's already earned his owners their money back several times over. That's good horsemanship and good management, and you have to tip your hat to the team around him. The 28-day freshen-up looks ideal, and he's going into this in good order. The concern, and it's a real one, is the track surface. We know this horse wants some give in the ground, and Eagle Farm looks like it could host a cricket match today. If it firms any further, well, let's just say the surface won't be doing him any favours. He's one of probably six genuine winning chances in the race, so it's not hopeless by any stretch. But the track is the variable that keeps this at a 5 out of 10 for each-way confidence rather than something more exciting. Keep an eye on the track rating right up until jump time.

Back at Randwick for Race 3, Written Scandal finds herself in another deep maiden field, because apparently that's just how they run maidens at Randwick these days. She has genuine ability, no question about that, but the barrier hasn't been kind again, and the big field combined with her likely position in running makes this a tough ask. Sometimes racing just doesn't set up for a horse and this looks like one of those days. We're happy to watch and cheer, but the betting interest isn't there. Each-way confidence is a 3 out of 10.

Race 6 at Randwick and Cherry Bombshell is the one that really gets the conversation going. She put in an absolute shocker last start, there's no other way to describe it. There were reports she may have been in season, but the more likely explanation is she simply raced too close to the pace first-up, did far too much work in transit, and it cost her late. The bounce-back question is valid and the competition here is genuinely serious. Chayan was arguably the standout two-year-old filly of last season. Pembrey has come back a completely different horse and looks like a serious threat. Chilly Girl was running fast times last prep. Bangkok Hottie and Striking Albi both have legitimate winning claims. This is a quality race and Cherry Bombshell has to be at her best to win it. She has the talent, absolutely, but after that last run you have to approach her with a degree of caution. Each-way confidence is a 4 out of 10.

And then we get to the one that has us genuinely interested. Race 7 at the Gold Coast, 4:24 in the afternoon, and Too Darn Finesse is our best each-way chance of the day. Forget last start completely. The race shape was an absolute disaster for her from start to finish, she was dictated to by circumstances entirely outside her control, and she never got the chance to show what she can do. This race sets up far more kindly. There are seven or eight genuine winning chances in the field, so we are not pretending it is a two-horse race, but she absolutely belongs in that conversation. Get the tempo right, get a decent run through the middle stages, and she can win this. She is the one we are most interested in today, the one we think has been underestimated because of a run that simply told us nothing u
