Chillaxing Stuns Eagle Farm In Queensland Cup

Tony Gollan turned heads at Eagle Farm on Saturday, landing the quinella in the Listed Queensland Cup (2400m) with Australian Bloodstock's Chillaxing leading home stablemate Felix The Scat.

Now look, if you know anything about Tony Gollan, you know the bloke can train a sprinter. Fast horses, short trips, that is what the man is famous for. But on Saturday at Eagle Farm, Gollan flipped the script in the best possible way, taking out the Listed Queensland Cup over 2400 metres and filling the quinella with Chillaxing and runner-up Felix The Scat. That is not the work of a one-trick pony, and anyone who reckons otherwise needs to have a good hard think about what they just watched.

Chillaxing, owned by Australian Bloodstock, saluted at $3.90 and the horse did it the hard way, grinding them down in the straight and proving he is every bit the stayer his European breeding suggests. Jockey Daniel Moor was in the saddle and, crikey, what a day he was having. Moor rode a treble on the card, which tells you everything you need to know about how his Saturday was going. When a jockey is in that kind of form, you want him on your horse, and Gollan was the first to say so.

The connection between Moor and Chillaxing is something worth talking about, because it has not always been smooth sailing. Moor missed the ride at Toowoomba when stewards stood him down as a precaution after a barrier incident in an earlier race. Chillaxing finished fifth that day without him, and Gollan is not shy about saying things might have gone differently. There is a real trust built up between this horse and this rider, and you could see it written all over the finish at Eagle Farm. The pair just work. Gollan put it simply when he said the symmetry between horse and jockey is the key, and after watching Chillaxing dig deep under Moor's urging, it is hard to argue with that.

Gollan was generous in his praise after the race, talking up Moor's contribution and reflecting on what the win meant given the preparation Chillaxing has had. The horse has had a stack of runs this prep and just kept answering the bell every time. That kind of toughness is not something you can manufacture. It either lives inside a horse or it does not, and in Chillaxing, it very much does. Gollan noted that as a former European horse, Chillaxing simply loves staying, and you can see why. He was bred for this. The longer the trip, the more he comes into his own.

For Australian Bloodstock, this is a ripper result. Owning a genuine Queensland staying talent is something to get excited about, and Chillaxing has shown through this preparation that he belongs at this level. The quinella makes the result even sweeter, with Felix The Scat running a bold race in second to ensure Gollan's stable dominated the feature from front to back. Racing days like this one do not come around all that often, and when they do, you enjoy every second of them.

Elsewhere on the card, the 2024 Queensland Guineas winner Kintyre continued his excellent form for trainer Todd Pollard by taking out the Listed Members Cup over 1400 metres. Kintyre has been in cracking nick and the win was another reminder that Pollard has a smart horse on his hands. It was a strong day for Queensland racing all round, with feature races producing genuine moments worth remembering. Gollan with the staying quinella, Moor with his treble, and Kintyre extending his winning thread. Eagle Farm on Saturday delivered the lot, and for punters and racing fans following Australian Bloodstock's runners, there was plenty to celebrate. Sometimes the racing gods deal you a good hand, and on this occasion, Chillaxing and connections played it just right.
