A Gut Feeling: Understanding Colic in Your Racehorse
Any horse owner knows that dreaded feeling when you see a horse showing signs of discomfort. At Australian Bloodstock, the health and well-being of our horses is our absolute top priority. We maintain a highly diligent management approach to ensure every horse in our care is happy, healthy, and ready to perform. One of the most serious health concerns for any horse is colic, and understanding it is key to prevention and rapid response.
So, what exactly is colic? Put simply, colic means "pain in the abdomen". It's not a single disease but a symptom of a problem in the horse’s large and complex gastro-intestinal tract. The causes can range from something mild and easily resolved to a life-threatening emergency. This is why every instance of abdominal pain must be taken seriously from the moment it's suspected.
The signs of colic can vary greatly, from subtle changes in behaviour to more obvious and violent indicators of pain. Common signs to watch for include pawing at the ground, repeatedly looking towards their flank, kicking at their abdomen, getting up and down frequently, or rolling.
There are several different types of colic. Gas colic, for instance, is caused by a build-up of gas that stretches the intestine, while impaction colic occurs when a blockage of food gets stuck. These types can often be resolved with prompt treatment. More serious, however, is a displacement or twisted gut, where a part of the intestine moves out of position. This is a critical situation that requires immediate surgical intervention to save the horse.
Because the early signs of a mild colic can look very similar to a serious one, swift action is crucial. Our expert trainers and agistment providers are exceptionally vigilant in monitoring for the slightest signs of trouble, ensuring that veterinary advice is sought at the earliest stage. At Australian Bloodstock, we pride ourselves on a proactive and meticulous approach to equine management, minimising risks and ensuring that our horses receive the elite care they deserve.
