A Delicate Hoof-hold: Why Laminitis is a Serious Concern for Racehorses

For anyone who loves the thrill of horse racing, the image of a powerful thoroughbred thundering down the track is a sight to behold. But behind that incredible athleticism lies a delicate balance of health and wellbeing. One of the most serious and potentially devastating conditions that can affect a racehorse is laminitis. At Australian Bloodstock, the health of our horses is our top priority, and that’s why we take conditions like laminitis so seriously.

What is Laminitis?

Laminitis is a painful and debilitating condition that affects the sensitive tissues, known as the laminae, within a horse's hoof. These laminae are responsible for suspending the coffin bone (the final bone in the leg) within the hoof capsule. When they become inflamed, it can cause the coffin bone to rotate or sink, leading to excruciating pain and, in severe cases, a career-ending injury.

The Impact on Racehorses

The high-energy diets required for racehorses to perform at their peak can, unfortunately, be a contributing factor to laminitis. Even a low-grade or 'sub-clinical' form of the disease can significantly impair a horse's performance without showing obvious signs of lameness. This could be the subtle difference between a champion and a horse that just can't seem to reach its full potential. Research has even shown that thoroughbreds with radiographic evidence of low-grade laminitis, but no visible lameness, earn significantly less prize money. More severe cases can lead to a long and painful recovery, and tragically, can sometimes result in euthanasia.

Our Commitment to Prevention and Care

At Australian Bloodstock, we believe that prevention is always better than a cure. We work closely with our veterinarians and farriers to implement a multi-faceted approach to minimise the risk of laminitis in our horses. This includes:

Careful Nutritional Management: We pay meticulous attention to the dietary needs of each individual horse. This means carefully managing their intake of carbohydrates and ensuring their diets are balanced to support their specific needs.

Regular Hoof Care and Monitoring: Our horses receive regular and expert farrier care to ensure their hooves are correctly balanced, which can help to reduce the risk of concussive laminitis. We also closely monitor our horses for any of the subtle, early signs of the condition, such as shifting weight from one foot to another.

A Proactive Approach to Health: We understand that laminitis can also be a secondary complication of other illnesses. Our team is vigilant in monitoring the overall health of our horses and acting swiftly at the first sign of any issue.

The welfare of our horses is paramount. It is our responsibility to ensure that these incredible athletes are given the best possible care throughout their careers and beyond. By taking a proactive and informed approach to conditions like laminitis, we can help to ensure our horses live long, healthy, and happy lives, both on and off the racetrack.
