A Looming Tragedy for Australian Racing

The news that William Hill is set to close around 200 betting shops in the UK is a sobering glimpse into the future of Australian racing if we continue down the current path of increasing taxation on wagering. While this is happening on the other side of the world, it serves as a stark warning of what’s to come when corporate bookmakers, already operating on thin margins, are forced to absorb yet another tax hike. The simple reality is that these businesses, driven by profit, will not and cannot sustain endless increases.

For too long, our sport's governing bodies have viewed corporate bookmakers as a bottomless well of funding, but the well is beginning to run dry. When these companies inevitably exit the market, as we are seeing in the UK, the real victims are the punters. A less competitive market means poorer odds and fewer options, driving recreational punters away from the sport. This exodus of the everyday punter is the greatest tragedy of all, as it severs the vital connection between the sport and its primary funding source.

The stark reality is that Australian racing does not control its own financial destiny. We are beholden to corporate entities that, quite rightly, are focused on their own bottom line. To future-proof our sport, we need a radical shift in our funding model. Our governing bodies must acknowledge the invaluable role of the punter and create a system that is not solely reliant on the goodwill of corporate bookmakers. This means exploring all options, from a more equitable distribution of the tax burden to innovative new revenue streams that directly engage with the racing public.

We are at a critical juncture. The decisions made today will determine the landscape of Australian racing for generations to come. We cannot afford to be complacent and assume the status quo will continue. The warning shots have been fired. It is time for our leaders to act decisively and implement the drastic changes needed to secure the long-term viability of our great sport.
