1.18pm – Doomben – Race 3 – Barazin

A brilliant win last start to take his earnings over $225,000(thanks to a top ride as well). Up in class now but carrying just 53kg. On my numbers he'd need to improve around two lengths to win, but he gets his chance.

Each-way confidence: 5/10.

He won on this day last year, but like the rest of us he's another year older. Let's just hope the winning post hasn't been moved any further away because none of us are getting there any quicker.

2.20pm – Rosehill – Race 6 – Miss Busslinger

A winner of $264,000 to date but with just four wins. Her last-start figure is the best going into this race, but mares can change their minds quicker than my wife deciding where we're having dinner.

Her best chance is to settle closer despite the awkward gate, but I'm not convinced she's got the early wheels to do it.

Each-way confidence: 5/10.

Expecting a leader-biased track that heavily favours those on the inside.

Backing mares can be like lending money — you'll feel good for about five minutes, then spend the rest of the day wondering why you did it.

2.55pm – Rosehill – Race 7 – Silvanito

The third of our runners also comes off a last-start win. This bloke has now banked over $412,000, which is outstanding for what he cost. By this stage of the day the track pattern should be crystal clear, and if it's as leader-biased as expected it'll simply come down to whether he can be close enough.

The race has about ten genuine winning hopes, so confidence stays at 5/10.

This race is more open than the pub doors on a Friday afternoon. You could make a case for half the field and still end up looking like you picked them out of a raffle barrel.
