Lord leads home quinella for the provincial king

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees reclaimed his crown as the state's Provincial-Midway king when Lord Of Biscay delivered his sixth win in the $1 million Championships decider at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

A year after finishing runner-up in the lucrative final, Lord Of Biscay atoned in dominant fashion to lead home a Lees quinella from classy mare Imposant.

Lees has now claimed half of the 12 editions of the Provincial-Midway Championships after first winning the race in its second year with Danish Twist (2016).

Serene Miss (2018), Cristal Breeze (2021), Kinloch (2022) and Spangler (2023) have also won the race.

It's also the third time he's had the quinella in the race and it proved to be a family affair with his wife Kristy among the owners of runner-up Imposant .

"We're the biggest stable in the provincials, we're entitled to have good representation," Lees said.

"Full credit to all the staff at home to get these horses presented on the day and they raced really well.

"He (jockey James McDonald ) got him a perfect run in transit, I was very confident in the run that he was getting all the favours that he needed and he reacted well.

"He got a lovely J-Mac ride from a touch tricky gate, put him into a perfect spot.

"I don't get too confident in the run but he looked pretty sweet in the run, just a matter of getting out and he got out at the right time."

McDonald threaded the needle to perfection to get Lord Of Biscay clear room at the 300m mark.

When the son of Lope De Vega saw daylight, the Irish import quickly put paid to his opposition.

Lord Of Biscay ($3.50 favourite) went into another gear to race away for a commanding three length success from Imposant ($21) with defending champ Matcha Latte ($4) three quarters of a length off her in third.

Buffalo ($9) flashed home from last for fourth.

"I had the right horse, Kris (Lees) is a champion," McDonald said.

"He's such a good trainer, he knows how to prep these horses up. He told me a couple of weeks ago ‘you want to be riding this horse'. He's in career-best form, and he felt enormous today."

"He knows his horses. When he said you've got to ride this horse, he said it with a beam of confidence.

"He presented him immaculate, the horse just did it all. He relaxed and showed a great turn of foot and he did the rest."

Lees confirmed he will now attempt to qualify Lord Of Biscay for this year's $3 million Big Dance via the Tamworth Cup on April 23.

Lovett hoping class can play part with Al Riffa

Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett is hoping the cream rises to the top when Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett) takes his chance in the upcoming Melbourne Cup.

Australian Bloodstock has shares in three Melbourne Cup runners in Al Riffa, Vauban (Galiway) and Royal Supremacy (Make Believe), but Al Riffa was always going to take much of the attention in the lead-up due to his recent form in the Curragh Cup (Gr 2, 1m 6f) and Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) which sees him shoulder a whopping 59 kilograms in the $10 million race.

But despite barrier 19 seemingly adding another complication for Al Riffa, Lovett told Racing.com the horse’s immense class made it difficult to discount him. “Essentially, you always like to draw in but if the rain comes, I’m probably not that disappointed,” Lovett said of the horse Australian Bloodstock part-purchased mid-year.

“I know there will be plenty of speed from outside. Changingoftheguard has drawn 24 and I assume the intention will be to go forward so hoping Mark [Zahra] can get on the back of that and get in somewhere.

“They tell me the horse is great. He never lost any weight on the trip over, and his work has been good, and we’re really excited for Tuesday. I think he’s in a good spot. He obviously has got to overcome topweight, which history would suggest is very hard to win with, but I think he’s a very good horse.

“I’m very confident he will run very well whether or not weight is a factor but he’s one of the better horses to come down in recent times and he just might be able to carry that weight. “Don’t forget that Joseph [O’Brien] has won two of these [Melbourne Cups] so that experience has got to help as well.”

Lovett said the 21 barrier for Royal Supremacy came as a blow.

“I was a bit disappointed with the draw for Royal Supremacy, so we’re just going to have to go back and ride for luck, but Vauban from barrier two is interesting,” he said.

“Obviously, he [Vauban] was disappointing in the Caulfield Cup and if you’re looking for an excuse, Blake Shinn said he was on the wrong leg the whole way around, but he was probably a little bit close [to the speed].

“We’re hoping on Tuesday, drawn barrier two, he takes no part early. Hoping there’s plenty of speed. Some of his best races in Europe has been when he was left alone.

“If you remember his win in the Sky High in Sydney, he came from right behind them and I suspect they are going to run this at a fairly good clip and it just might suit him.

“All his best form in Europe is on forgiving or yielding ground, as they call it.

“He’s a different horse to the first two times here, he went to pieces in the yard and Gai (Waterhouse) and Adrian (Bott) have done an amazing job to get this horse to be relaxed so if he parades well, I can’t have him not running well.”

ROYAL” WIN STRENGTHENS AUST BLOODSTOCK’S MELBOURNE CUP HAND

HUNTER syndicator Australian Bloodstock has already won the Melbourne Cup twice – and now is looking to have a three-strong representation in a bid to win the great race again.

Yesterday’s Royal Randwick Group 1 The Metropolitan winner Royal Supremacy appears certain to join Al Riffa (59kg) and Vauban (56.5kg) in the first ever $10m Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4.

Al Riffa, who won the Group 1 Irish St Leger at The Curragh on September 14 in Australian Bloodstock colours for the first time, is currently $5 second favorite for the Cup behind yesterday’s Flemington Group 1 Turnbull Stakes winner Sir Delius ($3.50).

Vauban, an unlucky The Metropolitan fifth yesterday, is at $18 and Royal Supremacy was a dramatic shortener from $101 to $26.

The Australian Bloodstock trio has different trainers.

Like the syndicator (which won the two-miler in 2014 with Protectionist and Gold Trip in 2022), Al Riffa’s Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien also is a dual winner, having scored with Rekindling in 2017 and Twilight Payment three years later.

Gold Trip’s trainer Ciaron Maher prepares Royal Supremacy, and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have Vauban, which ran in the last two Melbourne Cups for his previous Irish trainer Willie Mullins.

The Metropolitan quinella result (Royal Supremacy turned the tables on runner-up Soul Of Spain) not only was a great result for Australian Bloodstock, but also Newcastle Jockey Club as Soul Of Spain defeated Royal Supremacy in the Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) on September 19.

Many “experts” queried the validity of the Newcastle Cup form; the Group 3 race not having produced The Metropolitan winner since Glencadam Gold in 2012.

“Ciaron (Maher) was confident Royal Supremacy would win the Newcastle Cup, and he had a 2kg turnaround in the weights yesterday on Soul Of Spain,” Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett said this morning.

“I am yet to speak with Ciaron, but there is every possibility Royal Supremacy could go straight to the Melbourne Cup without another start.

“He has 51kg in the Cup, and is eligible for a penalty for his The Metropolitan victory.”

Lovett got ahead of the game securing last year’s Melbourne Cup winning jockey Robbie Dolan to ride the Irish-bred five-year-old yesterday.

“When we became aware Royal Supremacy had 50kg, there weren’t many options to get someone to ride him at his correct weight,” Lovett said.

“I got in touch with Robbie, and he was happy to get the chance to win another Group 1.”

It will be some story if Royal Supremacy, who ran last to leading Newcastle trainer Kris Lees’ Tavi Time in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) in May at his first Australian start, wins the Melbourne Cup.

“It was the best last you will ever see,” Lovett said of the gelding’s run at Scone.

“He drew near the outside, got back to last and couldn’t get clear running in the straight.”

Royal Supremacy, who has won five of his 13 starts, was placed in three Group races (including the Group 2 Italian Derby, 2200m last year) was purchased privately from UK trainer Andrew Balding’s stables, and his owner remained in him.

Al Riffa will arrive in Melbourne next weekend with the second shipment of overseas horses, and won’t run again before the Cup.

Vauban, who boosted his Melbourne Cup claims with an excellent performance in The Metropolitan after being cramped for room in the straight, is likely to go next to the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Saturday week.

Kembla Grange trainers Mitch Beer and George Carpenter along with Anthony Mountney were successful at different tracks yesterday.

The Beer-Carpenter continued on a winning run by scoring with King Nic ($8), ridden by Lee Magorrian, in a Midway Benchmark 64 Handicap (1400m) at home.

It was the Nicconi four-year-old’s second victory at only his fifth start.

Mountney travelled to Wagga where he landed the Maiden Plate (1065m) with first starter Eternal Ember ($5.50).

Ridden by apprentice Teagan Martin, the Exceedance filly defeated Victorian visitor Longreach Drover ($4.20) and $2.60 favorite Braj.

Eternal Ember was an $8000 buy for Anthony Mountney Racing at last year’s Inglis HTBA yearling sale in Sydney.

The world is his oyster now’ – Al Riffa cut for Melbourne Cup as he proves a class apart in Irish St Leger romp

Australian Bloodstock have a knack of buying high-class European imports and they look to have another brilliant one on their hands in the shape of the Joseph O’Brien-trained Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett), who advertised his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) potential with an ultra-dominant performance in the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) at the Curragh on Sunday.

Australian Bloodstock purchased the dual Group 1-winning son of Coolmore’s star shuttler Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) at the end of last month with the Flemington showpiece on the first Tuesday in November in mind and he more than justified their faith with an imperious display in the final Classic of the European season.

Winning rider Dylan Browne McMonagle was recording his first Classic win with this success, and his mount moved powerfully through the pack from off the pace before sprinting four lengths clear of King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) winner Amiloc (Postponed) to end the three-year-old’s unbeaten run.

Al Qareem (Awtaad) was third, another four and a quarter lengths off the pace.

Bookmakers in Europe responded by slashing Al Riffa’s price for the Melbourne Cup to 6-1 favourite ($7) from 12-1 ($13).

O’Brien said: “We knew the guys that were guaranteed stayers were going to try to expose the stamina of those that weren’t, and the pace was really strong.

“Dylan was cool on the horse and confident. He’s been a great horse for us, he always turns up and runs his race and I’m delighted for the ownership group.

“It was a gruelling race, but we’ll freshen him up and hopefully get him to the Melbourne Cup.

“He’s two for two now since he’s gone up in trip and he has the right attributes. He settles well, he has a turn of foot, and he stays. Hopefully we have a smooth preparation.”

Lovett added: “He was perfectly prepared by Joseph and his team, and we’re delighted to be a part of it.

“He wasn’t a hard horse to identify when he went out to 2800 metres last time. That convinced us that he might be the horse to try to win the Melbourne Cup.

“He’ll need to carry weight because they won’t miss him, but I feel sure he’s the right horse to do that.

“Joseph knows how to win the race, and we have four Melbourne Cups between us.”

Australian Bloodstock have a proven track record with northern hemisphere imports, highlighted by their 2022 Melbourne Cup triumph with fellow French-bred Gold Trip (Outstrip), while they tasted success in the Flemington showpiece for the first time in 2014 with Protectionist (Monsun), who was bred in Germany.

This year Australian Bloodstock will likely also be represented in the race by last year’s favourite Vauban (Galiway), who they purchased last year and relocated him from Willie Mullins to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Jamie Lovett, director of Australian Bloodstock, confirmed to ANZ News last month that the horse will stay in training with O’Brien and, while the Melbourne Cup is the entire’s main aim, he could also venture on an international campaign which could include both Dubai and Hong Kong.

Before Sunday, Al Riffa had tasted elite-level success on two previous occasions, his first coming in the National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) as a two-year-old, while he also took out last year’s Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr 1, 2400m) in Germany.

Bred by Sarl De Chambure Haras D’Etreham Et Al in France, Al Riffa is the third foal out of the unraced Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Love On My Mind, herself a sister to Group 3 winner and Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) second Mizzou.

Like the owners, O’Brien will be aiming to win the Melbourne Cup for a third time, having won it first with Rekindling (High Chaparral) in 2017, before Twilight Payment (Teofilo) handed the trainer a second victory in the Group 1 in 2020.

Al Riffa is still entire so could follow in the footsteps of Gold Trip who now stands at Lovatsville in Victoria for a fee of $8,800 (inc GST).

Melbourne Cup (G1)-winning syndicators Australian Bloodstock have purchased dual group 1 winner Al Riffa .

The talented son of Wootton Bassett , who dominantly scored a five-length romp in the Curragh Cup (G2) July 19, will remain in training in Ireland with Joseph O'Brien and be aimed at the Melbourne Cup, a race the trainer has won twice before with Twilight Payment in 2020 and Rekindling in 2017.

While Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett stressed the group 1 on the first Tuesday in November is the main target for the 5-year-old, the horse could also venture on an international campaign, which could include both Dubai and Hong Kong.

"We wanted a horse that could come down and not just be competitive, but be good enough to win a Melbourne Cup," Lovett told ANZ News.

"So the fact that (his last start win) was his first time beyond a mile and a half at the Curragh last start, so he has clearly ticked that box, he couldn't have been more impressive.

He's staying with Joseph and will likely head to Hong Kong and hopefully on to World Cup night in Dubai. That was a big tick for our owners because that was the brief—to find us a horse that we could travel abroad with."

Lovett confirmed Al Riffa—whose two group 1 wins have come in the 2022 National Stakes (G1) as a 2-year-old and the 2024 Grosser Preis von Berlin (G1)—will be given one final European run before his journey south for the Cup Nov. 4.

"It's my understanding talking to Joseph, he'll run in the Irish St Leger mid-September, and that'll be his last run and then he'll quarantine at Ballydoyle before coming down into Victoria."

Australian Bloodstock has a proven track record with Northern Hemisphere imports, highlighted by their 2022 Melbourne Cup triumph with French-bred Gold Trip , while they tasted success in the Flemington showpiece for the first time in 2014 with Protectionist, another bred in Europe.

This year, they will also be represented in the race by last year's favorite Vauban , who they purchased last year, and Lovett believes Al Riffa fits their criteria.

"There's obviously plenty of filters, and historically buying horses at the top of the weights for a big handicap can be flawed. But I think Gold Trip taught me that class carries you a long way and this horse is obviously a very, very good horse.

"He is a group 1 winner in Germany, but more importantly, he has form behind Rebel's Romance. In my mind, I don't think we've found the ceiling with this horse. I think Joseph made a similar comment that he's still a horse on the up; he's not heavily taxed.

"He's only had 14 starts, and I just feel he was the right horse for the brief that we had to go and purchase. There's a few local owners coming into the horse, but the majority of the horse was purchased by European clients and some clients in Dubai."

Australian Bloodstock has strengthened its formidable Spring Carnival lineup with the acquisition of promising German stayer Augustus.

The five-year-old entire was recently listed among Ciaron Maher’s 25 nominations for the upcoming Caulfield Cup , and plans are also in motion to nominate him for the prestigious Melbourne Cup , according to Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett.

“He’s an exciting horse to have in the stable,” Lovett said. “He’s lightly raced but already proven at a high level. We’re still weighing up whether to target the Melbourne Cup directly or give him a lead-up run, but we believe he’s made for two miles.”

Australian Bloodstock is no stranger to success in Australia’s greatest staying race, having won the Melbourne Cup twice — first with Protectionist in 2014 and again with Gold Trip in 2022. Interestingly, Augustus has competed in some of the same European form lines as Protectionist.

Lovett revealed Augustus had been on their radar for over a year. “We were very interested in him after his third in the German Derby last year, but his connections weren’t keen to sell at the time. Since then, he’s continued to improve and really stamped himself as a top horse.”

“He gives us the impression he’ll get two miles comfortably. He’s not the finished product yet, but there’s plenty of upside. Ciaron will enjoy the challenge of preparing him for the big Cups. And being just a Group 2 winner, he’s likely to get in well at the weights.”

The team has not yet finalised whether Augustus will arrive in the first or second shipment of international horses this spring. A spot on the first flight would allow him to contest the Caulfield Cup, while the second shipment would likely see him go straight into the Melbourne Cup.

“If he’s ready, we’ll definitely aim him at the spring, but even if not, we’re confident he’ll be a major staying force down the line,” Lovett added.

Two Melbourne Cups with imports (Protectionist and Gold Trip), but scoring with a debutante at Newcastle yesterday wasn’t without some significance either.

Whilst million dollar and plus yearlings are the norm nowadays. Australian Bloodstock had to pay only $10,000 at the 2023 Inglis HTBA sale in Sydney for now three-year-old Caltsar, who gave his large group of syndicate owners a quick return when he got off the mark as a $1.24 hotpot.

On the strength of two recent trial victories, Caltsar (Ash Morgan) justified his short quote and picked up $26,625, including a $5625 BOBS bonus.

“He’s definitely one of our cheapest buys in recent times,” said Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett this morning in giving credit to fellow director Luke Murrell.

“Caltsar had a parrot mouth, but there was nothing physically wrong with the horse.

“We thought he would bring a lot more, perhaps 40 or 50 thousand dollars.

“Luke wasn’t deterred and stuck to his guns and got him for $10,000.”

Caltsar was indeed the cheapest of five yearlings Australian Bloodstock purchased at that sale. Only eight lots earlier they went to $45,000 to secure the first living foal of their eight-times winner and Group 1 placegetter Princess Posh (who has been named Poshy’s Girl and is yet to race).

Still getting Caltsar cheaply was the easiest part. For Newcastle trainer Nathan Doyle to get him to the races was another story.

“The breaker told us Caltsar needed time, and he was right,” Lovett said.

“He’s definitely a work in progress, and has plenty to learn.

“Caltsar tossed Ash (Morgan) at the crossing after winning his latest trial (920m) on the course proper at Broadmeadow on April 2.

“It wasn’t a strong race yesterday, but a good starting point and great for his owners to get his maiden out of the way.

“Caltsar (by Calyx) will get better with experience and also when he gets over a bit of ground.

“Sometimes you never know when horses such as him will jump out of the ground and win a nice race.”

KRIS Lees has set a new goal with narrowly beaten Provincial-Midway Championships Final favorite Lord Of Biscay.

It’s the same track (Royal Randwick) where the import just failed to overhaul the talented Matcha Latte in last Saturday’s $1m PMC Final (1400m) – but this time it’s an even richer target.

That’s the $3m Listed Big Dance (1600m) at headquarters on November 4.

Lees won the inaugural running in 2022 with Rustic Steel, ridden by Nash Rawiller.

“Lord Of Biscay was very gallant last Saturday, and the extra distance of the Big Dance won’t be a problem,” Lees said this afternoon.

“He became eligible for the race when he easily won the Ballina Cup over 1590m in January.

“Lord Of Biscay has done a terrific job this campaign, winning a couple of races and also being placed twice from five starts.

“He will spell and we’ll get him ready for the Big Dance.”

Infancy Wins G2 Sapphire Stakes

Wandjina’s quality sprinting daughter Infancy produced a career best on day two of The Championships at Randwick when resuming off a break to win the Group II Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Showing her customary lack of early speed, Jason Collett settled Infancy back near the rear but found himself tracking short-price favourite Commemorative (I Am Invincible).

That pair came widest in the straight with plenty to offer but Infancy produced a powerful drive in the final 100 metres to outgun the favourite and win by half a length with with Lady Laguna (Overshare) third.

“She got a lovely ride from Jason and she's done the rest,” said trainer Kris Lees.

“She's got a really good Randwick record. She's a back marker, so if you go through her form, there's a few hard-luck stories amongst it, but she had the luck today.”

Bred by Australian Bloodstock, Infancy is one of two winners from two to race for Childhood (USA), an American-bred daughter of Lonhro, who won two of five starts in Ireland before failing at her only start in America.

A half-sister to three stakes winners, including the Grade III winner Baby J and the Grade 1-placed Laureate Conductor, Childhood (USA) was a 60,000 gns buy for Ronald Rauscher from the Godolphin consignment at the 2017 Tattersalls July Sale.

McEvoy Mitchell Racing / Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) shelled out $60,000 for a now to year-old filly by Graff consigned by HP Thoroughbreds to the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Her 2025 yearling, also by Graff made $90,000 to Tasman Thoroughbreds, again at Classic.

She didn’t produce a foal last year and has been served by Tassort.

Infancy is one of six stakes winners for Larneuk Stud’s Group 1 Australian Guineas hero Wandjina (Snitzel).

He’s enjoying a strong year with three stakes winners including this season’s Group II winner and Group I placed Hong Kong galloper Galaxy Patch.

Australian connections back older model Vauban to drive Melbourne Cup ambitions

Australian Bloodstock director Luke Murrell is not afraid to take a decent punt on overseas stayers in his quest for more Melbourne Cup glory.

Usually, though, the horse is younger than seven-year-old Vauban.

“We’ve only bought a couple of expensive ones like him at that level, and they’ve always been three or four-year-olds,” Murrell said.

“This one was older, but it’s probably like buying the Camry off the one-owner lady that’s got only 20,000kms on it, even though it’s 10 years old.

“When you look at his record, he’d won eight of 21, and he was always a tough, sound horse, because those VRC protocols are ridiculous, so for him to pass them, he’s very sound.”

Murrell and fellow Australian Bloodstock founder Jamie Lovett have built their syndication company on buying the right horse and giving clients a shot at the Melbourne Cup, and other features along the way.

Protectionist put them on the map with his dominant Cup win in 2014 and Gold Trip, which cost more than $2 million, repaid them with victory in 2022.

Vauban, though, is a new direction for Australian Bloodstock, which went halves with trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott in a purchase believed to be close to $2 million after last year’s Cup.

Under the guidance of champion Irish trainer Willie Mullins, Vauban twice failed to handle the occasion of the Melbourne Cup, finishing 14th and 11th, as favourite. It meant some questioned the gamble of buying him to race on in Australia.

A patient approach, though, helped the French-bred gelding fire first up in the group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) two weeks ago at Rosehill. Despite getting worked up and having to be shoved into the gates by several attendants, Vauban produced a sharp finish to come from last and edge out Arapaho on a day temperatures hit the mid-30s.

He surged into favouritism for the Melbourne Cup and set up a fascinating clash with 2023 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Dubai Honour in the $1.5 million group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) on Saturday at Rosehill.

Murrell was relieved but not surprised by the first-up effort.

“When we bought him, we knew we were buying something with one or two warts, but at the same time, people forget he was rated the No.1 staying horse in the world at stages over the last couple of years,” he said.

“And as it stands, he’s been favourite for the Melbourne Cup for three years. I don’t think any horse has been that, apart from maybe Makybe Diva.

“We copped plenty of criticism for buying him and, obviously, he was a big spruik and hype horse, but what he did didn’t surprise me because he showed that last year, that he could run home in those kinds of sectionals. And I think he will be even better when he gets a proper tempo.

“He’s a group 1-winning hurdler over there [Europe], and he’s obviously a group 1 flat horse, so just an elite horse who, like many of us, has got plenty of head noises.”

The Tancred was the initial target with Vauban, and he was a $4.20 second elect behind Dubai Honour ($3.10) with Sportsbet. Murrell’s only concern was how he would bounce into the run.

“Hopefully it didn’t take too much out of him,” he said of the first-up win. “It was a really hot day and he played up like a pork chop. If he didn’t have the first-up run, I’d say he was a good thing. It’s just how much did that take out of him first up? But this is the one we want to win, so fingers crossed.”

A shot at the Sydney Cup (3200m) in two weeks appears unlikely, but connections have not ruled out a run in the $5 million Queen Elizabeth at 2400m.

“If he runs really well here, there’s every chance he could back up, but in the back of everyone’s mind is you want to try and win a Melbourne Cup,” he said.

“And if we go to the Sydney Cup, then you have to go to the paddock. It’s very hard, especially for older horses, to come back and do a pre-season and have the miles in your legs for a Melbourne Cup.

“But he’s definitely a proper group 1 weight-for-age horse, so there’s plenty of options for us.”

Vauban is the first horse Australian Bloodstock has raced with the Waterhouse-Bott stable

“We were trying to buy him and the other one that come out with him,” he said. “But there had been other interest and through the pipeline we heard it was Gai, so rather than try to outbid each other, we teamed up.

“We were going to have one or two there for a while and things haven’t worked out, but we agreed on this one.”

Wootton Lass Salutes at Randwick

Two strong juvenile maiden races at Randwick on Wednesday very nearly produced a winning double for Coolmore based shuttler Wootton Bassett (GB) with his colt Regulated Affair missing by a whisker on debut and then his talented filly Wootton Lass made amends with a stylish victory at her second start.

Trained by John Sargent and ridden by Nash Rawiller, Wootton Lass was thrown into the deep end for her first start tackling the Group II ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes, but nothing went right that day and she pulled up slightly lame.

Back to the drawing board and given a chance to regroup in this 1100m maiden, the filly appreciated the drop in grade and crossed quickly from a wide draw to lead before kicking on strongly to win by the best part of a length over the favourite Scrumptious.

“Into the Sweet Embrace, the day got to her really and she got up and on the go, then she got galloped on, and just wasn't really herself,” said John Sargent.

“She was more relaxed today. Nash got there nice and easily, and she performed how I expected to first up.

“If you're not going to draw a gate, you kind of need some race versatility don't you, and she's shown that today; she's shown she's got that positional speed.

“Nash was said he'd be up on speed, but try and get a bit of cover, but you put the best on, and that's what you get. He just let her roll to the front, and she always looked comfortable.”

A $375,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Yarraman Park draft for Laguna Partnership/John Sargent, Wootton Lass is now a winner with the promise of more to come.

“She's got speed to burn, good natural ability and a good brain, so she will learn going forward,” said Nash Rawiller.

“I think now she can have a good break and come back a really nice filly.”

Bred by Australian Bloodstock and partners and foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Wootton Lass is the first foal from The Natural, a well bred metro winning half-sister by Fastnet Rock to dual Group I winner Fiveandahalfstar and to the dam of this season’s Group I winner El Castello.

The Natural was bought by Australian Bloodstock for $400,000 from the 2022 Inglis Chairman’s Sale and her second foal, a filly by Home Affairs, sold in the Yarraman draft at Magic Millions for $550,000 to McEvoy Mitchell Racing/Belmont Bloodstock Agency.

The Natural produced a colt by Brave Smash (Jpn) last spring then missed to I Am Invincible so will be good to go for an early cover this year.

Wootton Lass is the fifth Australian first crop winner for Wootton Bassett and all of them are metro winners and he has six stakes performers headed by Golden Slipper runner-up Wodeton.

Wootton Bassett has 17 entries for Inglis Easter.

Vauban defies heatwave to win on debut for new Australian connections following A$2 million sale

Vauban started his new chapter in Australia in fine style when thundering home to win the Sky High Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

On his first start since finishing 11th in the Melbourne Cup for trainer Willie Mullins and owners Rich and Susannah Ricci, Vauban made a winning debut for Australian Bloodstock following his A$2 million (£1.02m/€1.22m) sale shortly after the Flemington feature last November.

Almost three years to the day since the now seven-year-old won the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, he was racing in very different conditions to what he is used to, with temperatures soaring to a sweltering 36C in the Sydney suburbs.

The 1m2f trip of the Group 3 Sky High was also the shortest distance Vauban has run over in his career, which yielded eight wins in 21 starts in Europe.

Despite those challenges, he proved up to the task as he overhauled Arapaho on the line to score by a nose under Tim Clark.

Adrian Bott, who trains the 8-1 winner alongside Gai Waterhouse, said a lot of time had been spent on getting Vauban, who was reluctant to load into the stalls before the race, used to Australian conditions.

"That was part of the reason in bringing him to so many racecourse gallops, exposures and trials," he told racing.com.

"He wouldn't have run over those shorter races in his career. It's not until you can see them under raceday pressure in these race conditions that you get a true guide. I was really impressed by that today."

Vauban was bought with the aim of targeting a third Melbourne Cup – he was 14th when sent off favourite in 2023 – and is now set to contest the Group 1 Tancred Stakes and then possibly the Sydney Cup.

In the feature Group 1 Coolmore Classic , Lady Shenandoah enhanced her claims of becoming the season's champion three-year-old filly by registering her fifth straight win to hand trainer Chris Waller a third consecutive success in the A$1 million contest.

“There he was in a muck lather, as it was very hot and humid here yesterday and that’s why a lot of horses sweated up,” she explained. “Then, it took five people to push him into the gates.”

All campaign, Waterhouse and training partner Adrian Bott have worked hard on settling a somewhat fizzy Vauban before he races. After twice melting in the mounting yard before the past two Melbourne Cups, the trainers decided it was his pre-race jitters that were mostly affecting his performances.

Little was Waterhouse to know, but Vauban immediately lost his edginess after he was loaded into the gates.

“Tim (Clark) later said the moment he got in there, he was a different horse,” she said. “He immediately felt relaxed and he took that into the race.

“I think the crucial part for him was when he lost his position and ended up last about mid-race. That allowed him to drop his head and get him into that rhythm and it allowed him to breathe and then accelerate.

“For a while, I thought he was going to run stone motherless last, but then you could see him switch on and put in the work.

“Glen Boss messaged me last night and he said you could see he wanted to win that race. He saw the determination in his eyes and Glen is one person who would know that look.

“Adrian should get a lot of credit for this horse as he’s worked tirelessly on getting him to settle and I hope that performance is an indication of what is to come.”

Waterhouse said the next step was set in stone for Vauban before a decision is to be made on whether he races on or has a break with a view to the spring’s Melbourne Cup.

“He now goes to the Tancred,” Waterhouse said. “That’s his forte (staying), while yesterday was an added bonus.

“Horses really don’t do what he did. He started favourite in the last two Cups and run nowhere, and to think Adrian could prepare him to win first-up over 10 furlongs.

“That’s not his trip, so it was nothing short of remarkable.”

Bookmakers agreed and immediately firmed Vauban into the $3.80 favourite for the Tancred.

The VRC announced the result on Thursday morning with national expenditure directly attributed to Cup Week of more than $1 billion in 2024.

In other key figures released by the club, more 11.5m people engaged with the Melbourne Cup by watching, listening or participating in an activity to celebrate the day. That’s an increase of 500,000 and encompasses more than half of Australia’s adult population.

The four-day carnival returned a record $502.4 million in gross economic benefit to the state of Victoria, with 81 cents of every dollar spent on the Melbourne Cup Carnival flowing through to benefit the broader Victorian economy.

The economic impact study was conducted by conducted by market research company IER.

The 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival was directly responsible for bringing 68,898 international and interstate visitors to Victoria - the highest level of visitation since 2018.

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chief Executive Officer Kylie Rogers said the Melbourne Cup Carnival reaffirmed its status as one of Australia’s most culturally and economically important major events.

“The Lexus Melbourne Cup is ingrained in Australian psyche, and we see that reflected in the fact that more than 11.5 million adults engaged with and celebrated the day, generating a record-breaking national uplift in spending,” Rogers said.

“2024 saw increased crowds flock to Flemington, an increase in the television audience on Nine, and young racing fans on course with 45 per cent of general admission ticket buyers under the age of 35 which provides a strong platform for engagement now and into the future.

“Whether people come for racing, fashion, food or entertainment, Cup Week is the ultimate event to bring people together and have fun.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines said the Melbourne Cup Carnival was important to Victoria.

“We saw increased crowds race through the gates at Flemington and pack our hotels, retailers, cafes and restaurants across the city – pumping millions into the local economy and bringing Melbourne alive,” Carbines said.

“The Carnival not only featured the best in thoroughbred racing, fashion and entertainment but confirms Melbourne as the premier events destination - no other state does it like we do.

“We will always back the racing industry which generates more than $4.7 billion for the Victorian economy and helps sustain nearly 35,000 full-time equivalent jobs across all the codes.”

Sky High return for Vauban

Former Irish star Vauban will have one more guest appearance in Sydney on Wednesday before a much-awaited mid-March return to the races.

The Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 15 is set to feature Vauban in his new Australian Bloodstock colours for his new trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott following a majority part-sale to Australian connections late last year.

Vauban was listed to trial at Warwick Farm on Monday, but Bott explained the seven-year-old will benefit more from another day at the races for an exhibition gallop as he and Waterhouse attempt to calm his pre-race nerves.

"We just want to get him to the races and parade him around and get him onto the track for a nice gallop and that will top him off well," Bott said.

"The plan is the Sky High first-up at 2000 metres on his way to the Tancred Stakes (2400m).

"At this stage, it's one run at a time with him. We are keeping an open mind with his campaign. Obviously, we've only had him for a short time and we're learning a lot about him.Vauban has been highly fancied in the past two Melbourne Cups, with strong European form behind him for Irish trainer Willie Mullins, but the gelding has melted in the mounting yard before both races and ran below expectations.

What Are Betting Odds?

Odds basically tell you two things:

How likely something is to happen (according to the bookies).

The Three Types of Odds

There are three main ways odds are shown:

1️⃣ Fractional Odds (UK Style)

Example: 5/1 (read as “five to one”)

This means for every $1 you bet, you win $5 (plus your original $1 back).

Re: Endoscopic Grading System

The three major sales companies in the southern hemisphere, New Zealand Bloodstock, Magic Millions and Inglis are announcing that the Havemeyer grading system will replace the currently used Lane-Bain Fallon (1993) system, to assess laryngeal function in post-sale endoscopic examinations from the 2025 Sales onwards.

The 2003 Havemeyer 7-point grading system is currently used in the northern hemisphere and is widely accepted as the global standard. As such, it has superseded the Lane-Bain Fallon (1993) 5-point grading system. A comparative table is referenced below.

The validation for the change by Australian/New Zealand sales companies to the more globally accepted Havemeyer 7-point system is due to significant industry concerns surrounding the current endoscopy process using the Lane-Bain Fallon (1993) 5-point system, in conjunction with recent research that indicates the Havemeyer grading system improves grading objectivity and distinction between Lane grade 2 and grade 3 horses. The use of the Havemeyer grading system will see horses with a grade 3 (Lane) classification categorised as either grade II.2 or III.1, thereby reducing the number of horses classified as ‘grade 3’.

Comparative laryngeal function grade table

The change to the Havemeyer grading system seeks to mitigate some of the concerns regarding the sales endoscopy process which include:

1. The variability between veterinarians when grading laryngeal function. Particularly, inconsistency in categorisation of horses as having grade 3 (Lane) laryngeal function. Clear guidelines for assessing function have been recently published, using the Havemeyer grading system, to improve consistency between veterinarians and assist in distinguishing horses with grade 2 and grade 3 (Lane) laryngeal function. Using the Havemeyer system in a recent review of over 5,000 yearling post-sale endoscopic examinations ~95% of yearlings were classified as grade I, II.1 or II.2. Only ~4% were assessed as grade III.1 as opposed to ~20% being classified as grade 3 using the Lane grading system.

2. The widespread concerns that grade 3 yearlings do not perform as well and are more likely to become ‘roarers’ compared to grades 1 and 2 (Lane). Recent research using the Havemeyer grading system indicates no difference in future earnings or race placings between horses with grade II.2 function when compared with horses assessed as having grades I and II.1 function. Similarly, grade III.1 horses showed no difference compared to grades I and II in racing performance as 2 and 3 year olds.

It is important to note that post-sale endoscopic assessment of laryngeal function, which does not satisfy the Conditions of Sale (inability to fully open one side of the larynx), is unchanged regardless of the grading system used. Inability to fully open one side of the larynx (arytenoid cartilage) is classified as a Grade 4 (Lane) and Grade III.2 (Havemeyer).

In Summary:

The revised grading scale is likely to better serve vendors, buyers, and sales companies in Australia and New Zealand. The change in grading system used is not complex or of large magnitude, and the vast majority of sales veterinarians canvassed support the change.

Importantly, recent Australian research supports adopting the Havemeyer grading scale to align with current international practice, for the betterment of the Australian and New Zealand industries.

The 8-year-old Frankel gelding Herman Hesse (GB) is in the form of his life, backing up his win in the Listed Ansett Classic at Mornington with a dominant performance in Saturday’s Group II Sportsbet Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield.

Ridden by Declan Bates for Ciaron Maher, Herman Hesse (GB) stalked the pace set by his stablemate Okita Soushi (IRL) and the pair fought out the race.

Herman Hesse (GB) defeated the imported son of Galileo (IRE) by one and a quarter lengths with the Pride Of Dubai gelding Fancy Man a length back in third.

A 75,000gns purchase for Australian Bloodstock / Ronald Rauscher / Ciaron Maher Racing from the 2020 Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale, Herman Hesse (GB) advances his record to seven wins, three seconds, and nine thirds from 40 starts with earnings of $524,052.

Herman Hesse (GB) I not in the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup, but Maher said there are no shortage of suitable races for him.

“Herman can mix his form, but credit to the girls, Aaron, and the team down at Fingal,” Ciaron Maher said.

“He was about 50 kilos, 60 kilos overweight, and just bowling up and down the sandhills there. You know, he's a big, strong horse that takes a lot of work, and he just found his niche down there, can't thank them enough.

“He's a horse that requires a higher level of work as a big, strong gelding.. They just do more work there. Every day they do less galloping, and he seems to be thriving on it.

“Australian Bloodstock, we've scaled the heights. Hopefully, Herman's on the way to scaling some more heights, but they're just a great team to work with. They've got a big, massive ownership group, can’t thank them enough.

“I'm glad he's put a couple together. He's probably in career-best form. He looks fantastic and they're going to have a great rest of the spring carnival as well.

Okita Soushi is a dour, dour stayer. Two miles is his go. And I said to his owner he will run a better race today. I just changed the gear around, took a noseband off, put a Norton bit on, nice positive ride by Billy. If we can sneak him in, he'll run a race in the (Melbourne) Cup.”

Bred by Lady Bamford, Herman Hesse is a brother to the Group 1 Epsom Oaks heroine Soul Sister and the Group III Saint-Cloud Prix Thomas Bryon winner Dreamflight.

His dam Dream Peace (Dansili) won the Group II Deauville Prix de la Nonette and was 5-time Group 1 placed.

Dream Peace is a three-quarter sister to the former Coolmore shuttler, Catcher In The Rye (Danehill).

RACE 1 Above average tempo – Tricky race

MAP: looking for horses map wise leading ok but prefer 2 ^nd or 3 ^rd pair the fence sucking up saving as much ground as possible- - That leaves – Treize as the leader but 28 days off so a worry there – Llewellyn ( not good enough) and Alabama State most likley doing no work 3 back the fence

Best Ratings: Cheerful Legend- Peace officer- Danish Price

Summary- forced to have a selection it would be Alabama State

Race 2 - Above Average Tenpo

Map : again looking for horses saving ground closer to the speed. Pressure from a lot of horses here who have to push on to find a spot? should leave 3rd ( Mazita,Ballindeery Sal),4th (Sonic Tycoon,Don Stefano) and 5th pair (Wiggles,Miss Ghent) the desirable spots

Summary- trap race- of those in the market Tenbury wells gets many advantages over the top 2 who will be back and wide- i really think there is a horse here over the odds - RAG QUEEN - $41 is a nice price- Duvana is the other one i would include $15 ew is a great price- map against but im sure he has some quality

Map: SPirit Of Wealth leads from Ikasara- Yoshinobu his back- HIgh Octance his back with Switerland his outside

Summary : Coleman just maps horrible he is the horse of interest - perspiration just wont suit if he gets right back like last time but his progressive and good last start- was keen to be against Spirit of Wealth

Summary : Go very wide here impossible race but Gringotts looks too short- i thought a horse like Willimasburg looked a big price @$21 and if you are forgiving type Waterford- ENcap possible the map and bet though

Map- No speed but 5 resuming and 2 off a month so a real sharp sit and sprint expected-Olentia the fav gets right back which is a worry

TRAP 1 - You Must make sure your Horse Will be In The Horse

The Melbourne Cup Potential Field in theory has 123 chances but with some basic research we can split that lot into 2 areas- Qualifield ( 60) not qualified/coming (63).

The qualified crew are now fighting to increase their rating to ensure they are in the first 24 and of the not qualifield crew ( 63 of them) they have a total of just 9 races to try and not only qualify but get their rating up

With the Melbourne Cup just eight weeks away and the nominations recently released, I thought it was a good time to assess the potential field and analyze how things are shaping up. One of the most interesting points this year is that only 123 horses have been nominated, a significant drop from last year’s 182 and the 172 the year before. Additionally, the number of international contenders appears to be much smaller than usual, and the number of overseas horses likely to travel could be the lowest on record.

Since the Melbourne Cup has a field of 24, the order of entry is crucial. We’ve analyzed the 123 nominated horses, dividing them into those that are qualified and those that aren’t. Surprisingly, only 60 of them have qualified so far and the issue is a number of them look either unlikely to take their place – making the possible list even smaller.

With weights due to be released on September 19, the chances for many horses to make the field will depend on whether they’re qualified or not. Between now and the 19th of September, there are very few opportunities for unqualified horses to improve their standing, meaning we don’t expect the list to change much. Remember once the weights come out the only way a horse can elevate their position up the order of entry is to win an exempt race ( those being the Archer Stakes Run the 14 ^th September- the Bart Cummings – The cox Plate or the Caulfield Cup) or win a race and get a Penalty ( generally only the Geelong Cup- Mooney Valley Cup- . Lets face it if you haven’t got a high enough handicap to start with you wont be making the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate Field – making this list very skinny indeed in terms of win and your in races

Only 60 horses this year are qualified, including a few that have exemptions . For example, Future History secured its spot by winning an exempt race last season, and Magical Zoe won the EBOR this year, (though it was considered a relatively weak edition of the race). Last year’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner, Without a Fight, is also qualified and hence exempt albeit surely is LONG ODDS to show up on race day given he hasn’t race in coming on 12 months and the race being just 8 weeks away.

Trap 2 - Just Because you are a Good Horse Doesnt Mean you Will be the Melbourne Cup- make sure you can confirm its likely they will be heading this way

However, some horses in this list of 60 , such as Via Sistina,Place Du Carrosel, Serpentine, Cleveland, and Poptronic, are questionable based on current form, preferred distances, and racing patterns and one would think long odds to show up Cup day. It sounds strange but Via Sistine perhaps the best horse in Australia is you woudl think long odds to be in the race- given the likley weight she will carry and the fact she has never ever raced anywhere close to this distance- ditto Place Du Carrosel-

This year has also seen a sharp decline in potential international runners, likely due to the trend in European and overseas markets shifting away from breeding stayers. Many breeders, including those in Australia, are focusing more on sprinters and middle-distance horses rather than the long-distance stayers traditionally suited to the Melbourne Cup. This reflects a broader shift in the global bloodstock market but may come as a suprise to some to hear that Europe is heading this way. Unfortunately if the trend continues Europe -once the powerhouse of breeding out and out stayers- could eventually become like Australia and largely irrelevant espeically if they dont arrest the sharp decline which would be a concern given their sprinting ranks are deplorable

Regarding qualified horses, Without a Fight is questionable, as the horse has reportedly been dealing with a serious tendon issue. It would be a long shot for him to run in either the Caulfield or Melbourne Cup due to a lack of preparation. Similarly, I’ve heard from my contacts that the Japanese horse Shonan Bashotto is unlikely to make the trip despite being qualified but certainly not assured of gaining a start in the order of entry ( the average trip to send a horses from Japan to Australia and back woudl be in excess of $200,000 and that s along way to come to be sitting on the sidelines and not in the race )

There are still some races where horses can secure automatic qualification, including the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup, Bart Cummings, and Archer Stakes.. The Archer Stakes run this weekend will exempt the winner, and it’s worth noting that second and third place-getters also have a good chance of either qualifying or improving their handicap rating before weights are released.

After September 19 , there will be very limited options for unqualified horses to secure a spot. There are The following races – The Mornington Listed Ansett Classic , where the winner, can meet qualification requirements. However, whether these horses are strong enough to contend in the Melbourne Cup remains debatable. Other opportunities include the Bart Cummings, Herbert Power Stakes, Moonee Valley Gold Cup, and Geelong Cup, all of which offer the first three finishers a chance to qualify but important to note most likely any of these winners would need a penalty and weight readjustment. In Sydney the races that help a horse qualify would be the Colin Stephen- The Group 1 Metropolitan – ( yes just the 2 races) . The other interesting puzzle is If we are correct and Without A Fight does not accept it remains a huge unknown who will be given top weight also and quite likely do we see the weights raised

When placing your pre-post bets for the Melbourne Cup, it’s essential to consider whether the horse is already qualified as if its not its going to have a hell of a time trying to claw its way up the list. With such limited chances to qualify and the fact that most unqualified horses have lower ratings, they would need a significant penalty or handicap exemption to make the field. This year’s smaller pool of qualified horses—

Trap 3 - As a Rule the race is won by the progressive on the up horse who has the 10,000 metres plus of racing in their legs this prep. Beware the horse with limited race metres- in the last 15 years only 3 have won with less than the 10,000m in their legs - Fitness is key for Australias Biggest Race

The Greatest- VALE A TRUE LEGEND

With the Recent loss of arguably Australias greatest ever sprinter in Black Caviar one thing that always left me perplexed was just how little credit she got when compared to the mighty Winx- yes both horses where freaks but if im putting together a Noahs Ark of selecting only 1 horse then it has to be Black Caviar. We have seen some amazing horses over the last 30 years but for mine Black Caviar is the champion or champions and deserves to be recognised as such .

If we Compare Black Caviar and Winx, two of Australia's most iconic racehorses, I think for the layperson recency bias will kick in and they will say Winx was the best but whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion ( at least at the time of writing �� ) there is no doubt that Black Caviar was the superior horse in terms of facts and overall ratings that I personally do .No question both horses have left an indelible mark on the world of horse racing. However, several factors suggest that Black Caviar should be considered the superior racehorse when looking at their careers in a particular light. These factors include

her unbeaten record,
her dominance over shorter distances,
her international success,
and the broader context of her victories over a deeper pool of opposition – (how could be forget the great Hay List who in any other generation would have been a champion .

First and foremost, Black Caviar's unbeaten record sets her apart. Throughout her career, she raced 25 times and never tasted defeat. This flawless record is rare in the world of horse racing btu when you consider she raced 25 times and had to race some high class horses then its truly remarkable , perhaps my favourite horse of all time is the great sunline and even she had to taste defeat racing in a stellar generation against the likes of Northerly, and co. The consistency and reliability that Black Caviar displayed each time she stepped onto the track were extraordinary- especially when you consider her size and constant “niggles” that where so well handled by her Team, and this level of perfection arguably elevates her above Winx, who, while incredibly successful, did lose on three occasions early in her career and it must be said got the luxury of racing a very “steady” bunch of horses during her reign- often times when most of the opposition where out and out stayers resuming.

Black Caviar's dominance in sprint races also contributes to her legacy. She specialized in races between 1,000 and 1,400 meters, where she was unbeatable. Her extraordinary speed and power in these shorter distances were unmatched, and she set a new standard for sprinters around the world- in almost all her races – she was nearly really asked to find top gear such was her dominance – despite this some of the ratings she produced where ELITE WORLD CLASS Efforts. While Winx excelled over middle distances, particularly in races from 1,600 to 2,200 meters, Black Caviar's sprinting prowess is often considered the epitome of excellence in this category.

Another factor in Black Caviar's favour is her international success. In 2012, who can forget when she travelled to the United Kingdom to compete in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, one of the most prestigious racing events in the world. Despite suffering a muscle injury during the race and a jockey brain fade, Black Caviar managed to win – beating a very good field at the time, showcasing her grit and determination on an international stage. This victory not only demonstrated her ability to compete against the best horses in the world and solidified her ranking as the worlds best horse but also highlighted her versatility and resilience, traits that further bolster her claim to being the better racehorse.

In contrast, Winx, while an exceptional racehorse with 33 consecutive wins and a record four Cox Plates, primarily raced in Australia. Some may argue that this lack of international competition slightly diminishes her legacy compared to Black Caviar, who proved her mettle on a global stage.

Despite this, she dominated every race she entered, often winning by significant margins in efforts that where full of Awe and WOW. The ability to maintain an unbeaten streak in such a competitive environment further underscores her greatness and is a significant reason why many consider her the superior racehorse when compared to Winx.

In conclusion, while both Black Caviar and Winx are legends in their own right, Black Caviar's unbeaten record, her dominance in sprinting,her overall ratings she was able to produce when not fully asked, her international success, and the challenging competition she faced all contribute to the argument that she was the better racehorse and our greatest sprinter EVER. Each horse's achievements are remarkable, but Black Caviar's unique combination of attributes sets her apart in the annals of horse racing history and for me she will always be the benchmark for sprinters

Having just four starts to her name she is the winner of two and had an unlucky run in the Group 1 French Oaks recently, being beaten only three lengths when things didn’t go right.

Luke Murrell said “these types of horses with this much class and ability are almost impossible to find. I am very pleased and relieved to say have we have secured her. The ratings she has produced include some dazzling turn of foots- in one race she runs home in 33.10 for the last 600m! Those times are going to be fantastic when you are getting that over middle distances!!

The fact she was started third time out this season in a Group 1 race is a testament to the esteem she is held in, we believe she is a Group 1 winner in waiting.

The immediate plan will see her race next Sunday in the Group 1 German Oaks. We believe with her rating and form she heads there as one of the horses to beat. A horse with this much blue sky and potential is exciting - we might end up back in France or look abroad to the UK or even USA. What Is Colic

Colic in thoroughbred horses is a common and often serious condition characterized by abdominal pain.This time of year with a change of season its even more common and as a owner it often can be a scary and unknown period as your baby goes through this often painful process.

How Does It Occur?

This pain can arise from various underlying causes, such as digestive disturbances, gas accumulation, or intestinal blockages. Thoroughbreds, known for their high-strung nature and intensive training regimens have only one stomach unlike cows and sheep but being sensitive animals to start with anything uncertain in a horses stomach needs to be acted upon immediately . Factors like sudden feed changes, high grain diets, and insufficient roughage can disrupt the delicate balance of the equine digestive system, leading to conditions like impaction or gas colic.

Several specific causes contribute to the development of colic in thoroughbreds. Impaction colic occurs when feed material or foreign objects obstruct the intestines, often due to inadequate water intake or insufficient fiber in the diet. Gas colic results from the buildup of gas in the intestines, typically due to the fermentation of poorly digested food. Displacement or torsion colic is a severe form where a part of the intestine twists or moves out of place, cutting off blood supply and causing intense pain. Additionally, parasites, particularly in younger horses, can cause colic by damaging the intestinal walls or causing blockages.

How do you Fix It ?

Prompt and effective treatment is crucial to managing colic in thoroughbreds. The initial step usually involves a thorough examination by a veterinarian to determine the cause and severity of the condition. Mild cases might be treated with medications like analgesics and anti-spasmodics to relieve pain and intestinal spasms. In cases where dehydration or impaction is suspected, administering fluids via a nasogastric tube or intravenous route can help rehydrate and soften the impacted material. For gas colic, walking the horse and administering medications to reduce gas production can be beneficial. The Need for Industry-Controlled Funding

Racing must control its funding model. The current reliance on corporate bookmakers, who often act unethically, is detrimental. Many punters face account closures and bet restrictions despite modest winnings, highlighting the need for industry-regulated betting models.

One interesting story I had this week was a retired pensioner who has a 2.5% share in a cheap horse rang me to get my opinion- each Wednesday and Saturday he bets $30 per day with Ladbrokes and BET365- ( having just opened up a Bet365 account) . 6 weeks ago Ladbrokes contacted him and said he is banned from all promotions and fixed odds betting as in the last quarter he had turned over $847 and was showing a profit of $41.15 cents ( don’t get me started on the blatant fraud that is the rounding down) – yes that was his profit but he has been banned from just about all betting options because of his results. Not to be deterred he decided to open a Bet365 account – his first 5 bets all lost without one collect ( mainly $5 bets) but he too got an email to say he will be banned form all future promotions and fixed odds ( unless they feel under the MBL ). As a industry we need to protect these punters and this level of disregard and service needs to be stamped out

Now if a retired pensioner is making Ladbrokes and Bet365 shake in their boots the whole industry is doomed. Unfortunately this is not a one off story – I could name at least 50 such stories ive heard from people in the last 6 months. If you multiple these stories over the whole of Australia just how much money is the industry losing !! Its gotten to beyond a joke and needs to be fixed- the simple answer is for the Racing Bodies to run their own betting model and choke out these foreign betting companies that are like a poison to the industry and they are here for one thing – that’s profit- its not for the betterment of the sport but our illustrious leaders are all failing to see this

The TAB's Role and Failures

You might say the TAB is there – but the TAB has been one of the biggest companies that has been limiting or rejecting bets . We read this week that the TAB now is losing market share and wants to increase taxes on punters further- which is typical of corporate morons running a once thriving business into the ground. Only last week the TAB couldn’t bet on some of the ASCOT races simple because their system cant handle more than 24 runners – HELLO – its 2024 ! Again more money going out the door that should be going back to racing and now one is doing anything about it

To ensure the survival and growth of racing, the industry must:

Revise the taxation and gambling model. Separate racing and sports betting from poker machines.
Promote & Educate punters to transform losing habits into potentially profitable ones.
Regulate the funding model. Establish industry-controlled betting to reduce reliance on unethical corporate bookmakers.
Improve leadership. Appoint leaders with real-life racing and gambling experience, who prioritize the sport's long-term health over personal gain.

Without these changes, the future of racing looks bleak, with reduced prize money and declining interest.

The time for action is now.

Sayedaty Sadaty , who finished fifth in the Derby, has been sold to Australian Bloodstock in a move owner Ahmad Al Shaikh says will allow him to “keep dreaming” with Betfred St Leger hopeful Deira Mile.

Ridden by Tom Marquand at Epsom, Sayedaty Sadaty joins the likes of Hoo Ya Mal, Youth Spirit and Emaraaty Ana in being traded by Al Shaikh to enable him to continue to patronise British racing.

The owner said the high costs of being an owner in Britain necessitated such an approach. “This is part of how I do it and it means I have not had to pay for any horses from my own pocket for six years now, only with what I have made from selling the horses," he said.

“For me, I need to do this to continue. Each year, I like to try and sell two to three horses and then that allows me to keep the others. This year, I have two good horses, which means I can keep one because I have sold one. And I have been able to buy horses who are two-year-olds and can come through over the next year for me.”

Deira Mile produced a solid performance to finish fourth behind City Of Troy at Epsom last time out and is likely to skip Sunday's Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh, for which he had been a 14-1 shot, in favour of an autumn campaign.

“I have had a lot of calls about Sayedaty Sadaty and I have had a lot of calls about Deira Mile. I have had people at Ascot who want to try and buy him from me but I am able to keep him now,” Al Shaikh said. “I hope he can run in the St Leger, and then maybe the Arc. I don't know, but it's exciting.

“I buy the horses myself and people are now coming to me to ask if I can buy for them, but I don't want to as I don't want to be blamed if they don't do well.”

Concerns have grown in recent years about the impact of relatively modest prize-money on the quality of British racing, with multiple champion Flat trainer John Gosden saying it risked becoming “a nursery for other parts of the world” unless returns to owners improved.

Al Shaikh, Sheikh Mohammed’s former media adviser, highlighted the costs as a factor in his approach to trading, but also echoed comments made by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid at Royal Ascot that his approach was to try to create stallions.

“This is a very expensive hobby, so you need to try and trade where you can because it costs a lot of money to keep going,” Al Shaikh said. “When you buy a horse, your first thought is always breeding – can this horse be a stallion? We are lucky that we have a stallion now in Dubai Mile, but when you don't think you have a horse who can do that, then you have to think about selling.

“I enjoy racing, I enjoy British racing, but this is how it has to be. This way I can stay in British racing and keep dreaming.”

Smashing Time vying for Group 1 glory in JJ Atkins

Brave Smash’s talented juvenile gelding will bid to become the Yarraman Park-based sire’s first elite-level winner

Trainer Rob Price has a growing confidence that bolt-from-the-blue gelding Smashing Time (Brave Smash) can provide his sire’s first Group 1 and launch his stable’s union with Australian Bloodstock in stellar style in Saturday’s JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m).

Bookmakers have tightened Smashing Time to around the $15 mark for the last juvenile major of the season after he leapt from running third in a modest Kensington two-year-old handicap (1400m) to come fifth of 18 in Queensland’s Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on June 1.

The latter run changed Price’s mind about spelling the gelding, a decision backed by his further improvement under the Queensland sun.

Price knows Godolphin colt Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot) deserves his dominant odds-on position after storming home in the Sires’ for a third straight win, one start after taking Randwick’s ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

But if the Brisbane weather stays fine, as is forecast, Price believes a good track will bring his runner firmly into calculations.

If he can succeed, it could kick off a huge race-to-race double for Yarraman Park – which would stunningly have nothing to do with their flagbearer I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), just a few weeks short of him claiming a third general sires’ title.

Aside from Smashing Time running in the Atkins for Brave Smash, who joined Yarraman’s roster last year, the other stallion among the stud’s trio – Hellbent (I Am Invincible) – has two strong chances in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) in $11 shot Benedetta and Magic Time, at $13.

Yarraman would also no doubt welcome an all-Hellbent double, with his filly Aemelius currently second-favourite in the JJ Atkins at around $8.

And they wouldn’t say no to I Am Invincible, runner-less in the JJ Atkins, prevailing in the Stradbroke, though that was looking unlikely on Monday. Vinnie still had Zarastro and Nettuno among nominations for Queensland’s $3 million feature, but they were 26th and 30th in the entry order for the 18-horse capacity event.

Aemelius (Hellbent) finished second in Saturday’s The Phoenix (Listed, 1500m) when run down late by Chris Waller’s Imperialist (Churchill), who has noticeably continued to firm for the JJ Atkins since that third-start win to share third-favouritism at around $9, with Kelly Schweida’s El Morzillo (Star Witness).

Amelia’s Jewel’s (Siyouni) half-brother Bosustow (Blue Point) also shares the $15 slot with Smashing Time. Having run third in the VRC Sires’ Produce (Gr 2, 1400m) in March, that colt reverted to a 1350 metres Doomben midweeker to break his maiden last Wednesday – by an emphatic 2.87 lengths – and will likely appreciate the 1600 metres this Saturday.

But still, Price says the once-wayward Smashing Time stands an undeniable chance to supply Brave Smash’s first Group 1, after the three top-tier placings this season of the star performer of his three stakes winners, Kimochi.

Smashing Time – gelded after throwing his rider behind the gates before a Warwick Farm barrier trial that left without him – later debuted with a third over 1100 metres at Kensington on a good 4 on March 27. He won his next start in a 1400 metre 2YO “Super” maiden on a soft 5 at his home track of Kembla Grange, before that Kensington third on a heavy 9.

His fifth in Eagle Farm’s Sires’ came on a deteriorating soft 6 track, with Smashing Time settling near the rear for jockey Tommy Berry and being tightened for room around the home turn as Jamie Kah and Broadsiding made their run wider out. Once in clearer running inside the last 200 metres, Smashing Time finished on solidly to be beaten 2.92 lengths.

Price believes a firmer surface this Saturday will suit his charge perhaps more than Broadsiding, who ran two thirds and a fourth on good 4s before unfurling his current winning hat-trick on a soft 5, a heavy 10 and a soft 6.

“Our run in the Sires’ was super,” Price, who trains with his son Luke, told ANZ Bloodstock News. “He got back and made good ground, then Jamie had us a bit tight on the corner. The track that day was a bit loose, and it was all new for our boy to navigate that. Plus it raced in lanes, and I don’t think we were in the best lane.

“When you get a dry track, they’re not racing in lanes, and the firmer surface will suit our bloke better. Broadsiding is the one to beat, but at the same time he’s there to be beaten. He comes back to a dry track, whereas his best form has been on the wet.

“I do think we need to draw a good gate. Either we draw the middle, or Tommy’s got to ride the race of his life. But our boy is a talented horse, with a lovely long stride, and it’s also a good sign when someone like Tommy Berry sticks with him for three races in a row.”

Smashing Time is raced by a large group of owners, many from the NSW south coast, who’ll be making the trip to Brisbane.

He’s the first horse Jamie Lovett and Luke Murrell’s Australian Bloodstock have raced with Price and his co-trainer son Luke.

Australian Bloodstock in fact bred Smashing Time, having imported Brave Smash from Japan for a racing career which included Group 1 victories in Caulfield’s Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Moonee Valley’s Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 2018.

Smashing Time is the fourth foal of former Woodlands Stud maiden winner Trick (Street Cry). The 13-year-old has history with Japanese-bred stallions, having thrown Singapore stakes-placed gelding Super Impact (Real Impact), and having gone to another Australian Bloodstock Japanese import Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact) to throw the yet-to-race filly Stosen.

The Prices bought the yearling Smashing Time for $180,000 through last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, though the purchase wasn’t finalised until a couple of weeks afterward.

Price recalled Smashing Time failed a scope at the sale due to a bout of chondritis, which he was happy to let settle.

“After he failed the scope, he had to go back to the farm and later get re-scoped before the sale was confirmed,” he said.

“I wasn’t overly concerned. Chondritis is pretty common, a bit of swelling in the upper airway, and you can often see it at the sales because the horses are kept in tiny boxes and there’s a lot of dust around.

“So we waited till it got better, then found some owners. Then after we broke him in, Jamie Lovett contacted us and said, ‘Is there any of the horse left?’”

Australian Bloodstock bought back in for 25 per cent, hence Smashing Time bears their famous colours of blue with a white horseshoe and black and white checked sleeves.

Price’s initial interest was piqued as he’s a devoted fan of Japanese stallions. This is the third Brave Smash he’s trained, while perhaps his finest performer was the ill-fated Count De Rupee (Real Impact), a Group 2 winner of seven races and $2.6 million in prize-money, and his former Arrowfield shuttling sire’s second-best performer worldwide.

“I do love that Japan’s breeding scene is very regulated, whereby they can’t breed from anything that’s too unruly or has bad airways,” Price said. “I’ve always said the two main things are feet and airways: they need something to land on, and if they can’t breathe, they’re in all sorts.”

While Luke Price usually does the stable’s travelling, his young family – with four small children – has led to his father wintering in Brisbane.

It’s been a lucrative few weeks, though also frustrating. Our Gold Hope (Lope De Vega) was only going to have one run in Brisbane, but the strength of her fourth in the ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) made the Prices push on to last Saturday’s Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

The grey looked the winner of that $700,000 feature at the 100-metre mark, only to have to settle for second to $101 bolter Socks Nation (Sioux Nation). A long neck the other way would have made quite a difference, though the $126,000 second prize helped salve the wounds.

Now Smashing Time – who’d similarly been intended for just one Brisbane run – has the chance to go one better, or at least pay some more travel bills in the $1 million JJ Atkins.

“We had a nomination in for the Atkins, but we were actually going to take him home after the Sires’,” Price said. “But the way he came through the run, and he’s done so well while in Queensland, we decided to keep going.

“It’s true what they say about the Queensland sun. The horses have done very well up here. Plus, it’s great getting away with them, where it’s just me looking after two horses. You get lots of one-on-one time, and the horses like that. You’re hand-walking them everywhere, rather than them just going on the treadmill. They get a bit spoiled, and there’s no doubt they grow in confidence.”

Japanese bred Brave Smash (Jpn) has made a fine start to his stud career and with his first Yarraman Park bred foals set to arrive this spring the Group I winning sprinter added a new stakes-winner to his tally at Belmont in Perth on Saturday when progressive gelding Brave Spirit captured the Listed WATC Raconteur Stakes (1400m).

Trained by Steve Wolfe and ridden by Shaun McGruddy, Brave Spirit has been super consistent this preparation working through his grades and emerged triumphant after his first crack at a Black Type race.

Brave Spirit charged to the line from back in the field to win by more than a length running away with his overall record now an impressive three wins and six placings from 10 starts with prizemoney just shy of $230,000.

Bred and retained to race by Mt Hallowell Stud after passing in at the Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Brave Spirit is the second winner from well bred Flying Spur mare Miss Shanghai, a half-sister to stakes-winner Granny Red Shoes, the dam of this season’s stakes-winning juvenile High Octane from the family of Group I winner Star Satire.

Brave Spirit is the third stakes-winner for Brave Smash joining Group II winner Kimochi, who sold for $2.2million at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale and the ill-fated Group winner Brave Mead.

Brave Smash has the excellent seasonal strike rate of 50.9% winners to runners and is priced at $33,000 this spring.

Maher's tribute to Cup champion

Ciaron Maher has paid tribute to his Melbourne Cup-winning champion Gold Trip who has been retired to stud after a stellar career.

The imported horse gave Maher arguably his biggest thrill on a racecourse, dominantly winning the 2022 Melbourne Cup, and the champion trainer says he will always cherish Gold Trip and his feats on the track.

“This horse has just been remarkable. He delivered our first Melbourne Cup, and for that, he will always have a special place in my heart,” Maher said.

“But his Turnbull Stakes win was arguably a better performance, given the field he beat that day.”

Maher gave credit to Gold Trip’s owners, who had to bide their time to see their eventual Melbourne Cup winner grace the turf in Australia.

“The ownership group deserved all the success given the patience they showed in his first 12 months in Australia, and I'm thrilled that we’ll get to see his progeny, given he’s such a beautiful horse,” Maher said.

Gold Trip was a winner of more than $7 milion in prizemoney during his 26-start racing career across Europe and Australia.

Lovett hails his 'special horse'

Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett said his admiration for Gold Trip as a racehorse and his anticipation about his future were key in the decision to retire the 2022 Melbourne Cup champion to stud.

“We could have rehabbed him with his tendon and maybe got him back to the track, but we didn’t want him to become just another horse,” Lovett said of the French-bred Gold Trip.

“He did our colors proud every time he stepped out. He’s done such an amazing job for us. A real banner horse that we will treasure forever.

“He’s been a very good horse to everyone – a very special horse.

“Now he now gets the opportunity to continue that success at stud. That is so exciting for the group as he’s got the looks, the style and the elite performance that could see him really make his mark there.”

Lovett admitted going well beyond the normal spending limits for European imports when he teamed with trainer Ciaron Maher’s bloodstock expert Will Bourne to buy Gold Trip out of France for $2.3 million,

“He just looked one out of the box in everything he’d done up to that stage and so we went for him and thankfully, got him,” he said.

Not all went to plan however with Racing Victoria vets denying him a Cox Plate run in 2022 for his Australian debut as he was deemed to be lame. The following autumn, a foot abscess put him out again until the spring, where he would make his move and become a Melbourne Cup champion.

Lovett said few stallions could boast such racetrack performances.

“His CV is extraordinary,” he said. “He ran fourth in an Arc, is a G2 winner in France, won a Melbourne Cup, ran two placings in Caulfield Cups, arguably he could have won a Cox Plate when running fifth and he beat up Romantic Warrior (in the 2023 Turnbull Stakes).

“He’s not a hard horse to send a broodmare to if you want to get a good racehorse.

“He’s a beautiful style of horse with an incredible attitude – that’s what I like when I am mating my mares. He’s also got a set of lungs that I don’t think I’ve ever been involved with before.”

Lovett said that Gold Trip, who will stand for just $8800 at his first season in the spring at Lovatsville near Seymour, will get every opportunity to succeed at stud.

“He’s got a very good ownership base that will send plenty of good mares to him,” he said.

“I thought it was always imperative that we stood him down there (in Victoria),

“He was sought-after by a few New Zealand farms, who were keen to get him, but, myself included, the ownership base would have been less inclined to send mares to New Zealand.

“At my farm (in NSW), we breed 30 mares and I am happy to send them down. Obviously, I want to be able to support him and be art of the journey now for whatever happens in the future.”

Australian Bloodstock’s Melbourne Cup hero will command a fee of $8,800 in his first season at the Victorian farm

Gold Trip (Outstrip) has become the latest addition to Australia’s stallion ranks with the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner set to join the Lovastville roster, where he will stand for an introductory fee of $8,800 (inc GST).

In a move that Sam White, founder and CEO of Lovatsville, feels ‘offers something different’, Gold Trip will stand at Lovatsville alongside Royal Meeting (Invincible Spirit), the sire of this season’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Hayasugi, Japanese-bred Fierce Impact (Deep Impact), and Generation (Snitzel), who, like Gold Trip, will cover his first book of mares in 2024.

White, who previously worked for Coolmore and later Ciaron Maher Racing before embarking on other business interests within and outside the racing industry, joined forces with Seymour Park owners Darren Thomas and Mark Pilkington and Leneva Park’s Luke Vandersluys to form Lovatsville at the latter’s Northwood Road farm, and is excited to stand the former Maher inmate.

“He is a unique proposition and it probably adds diversity to what our roster currently offers,” White said of Gold Trip.

“He was a Melbourne Cup winner and the breeding industry will probably see that as a negative, but if you look at his career in totality he did race as a two-year-old and he was a Group winner at three and performed in an Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

“He was also second and third in a Caulfield [Cup] and also arguably very unlucky in a couple of Cox Plates.”

Having begun life in France with Fabrice Chappet, Gold Trip won the Prix Greffulhe (Gr 2, 2200m) as a three-year-old, which would prove to be his sole victory from ten starts in his homeland.

However, during those outings, the son of Outstrip (Exceed And Excel) placed at the top level on no less than three occasions, while he also ran a terrific fourth in the 2020 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m), beaten two and a quarter lengths by winner Sottsass (Siyouni).

In a deal reported to be worth $2.3 million, Gold Trip was then sold to Luke Murrell and Jamie Lovett’s Australian Bloodstock and was transferred to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

He made his long-awaited debut Down Under in July 2022, with a third-placed finish in the Winter Challenge (Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill. A Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) third and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) fifth would follow, before the entire announced himself on the stayers’ scene with a narrow second in the 2022 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), running Durston (Sea The Moon) to within 0.2 lengths.

Putting a disappointing ninth-placed effort in the Cox Plate behind him, Gold Trip went on to defeat Emissary (Kingman) by two lengths under Mark Zahra in the Melbourne Cup, handing Maher and Eustace their first win in the Flemington showpiece.

“He won a Melbourne Cup, was beaten a lip in the Caulfield Cup, was a weight-for-age Turnbull Stakes winner, could have won a Cox Plate and was elite in an Arc. He is a legitimate freak,” Maher said.

Gold Trip doubled his Group 1 tally in the Turnbull Stakes the following season, impressively dispatching a high-class field, including Caulfield Cup second West Wind Blows (Teofilo), last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Soulcombe (Frankel), and champion Hong Kong stayer Romantic Warrior (Acclamation), who has since been undefeated in four runs including for his historic win in the 2023 Cox Plate.

“His win in the Turnbull was outstanding, when he blew past Romantic Warrior and we all know what that horse can do,” White told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“Gold Trip is a stayer with a bit of speed and class. There is a place for high-quality racehorses at stud and given time and patience you can have success with them, as evidenced by horses like Shocking and Tarzino, to name a small few.

“To stand a Melbourne Cup winner is something really unique for the farm and the brand.”

Returning for 2024 with an excellent third placing in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield on February 24, Gold Trip subsequently suffered a tendon injury the following month, something that has led to connections curtailing his racing career.

The second foal out of Sarvana, who herself is a half-sister to Group 3 scorer and Group 1 placegetter Sarkiyla (Oasis Dream), Gold Trip is a half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Got Wind (Olympic Glory) and winner Gotha (Ultra).

He retires with an overall record of three wins and a further eight placings, including five of those at the highest level, and prize-money earnings of AU$7,325,486.

“What appealed to us in Gold Trip was his dynamic turn of foot, as we saw in that explosive performance in the Turnbull Stakes,” Australian Bloodstock’s Lovett said on Thursday.

“There is no doubt in my mind that he was beating the best 2000-metre field assembled in this country in the last 20 years and he beat them with his head in his chest.

“Weight-for-age is our measure for the elite, however when he was asked to carry weight in the big handicaps he had the class to do that too and I believe that is a quality that will resonate with breeders looking to breed a genuine racehorse.”

Moving into his new career at stud, White feels that the now seven-year-old will have little trouble in gaining support from breeders, and also believes his opening fee of $8,800 (inc GST) is one that will appeal.

“He has a very supportive and dedicated ownership behind him who are keen to support him at stud,” White told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“When you have people like Australian Bloodstock and Ciaron Maher looking at his stock at the sales in a few years time, they won’t be scrubbing off Gold Trip.

“We are very happy to have him at the price point he is and it gives breeders an option to tap into real class and quality.

“He just offers something different and that is something we are proud of.”

Australian Bloodstock Win Canberra Cup

Kris Lees and Australian Bloodstock form a formidable partnership that triumphed in the Listed Canberra Cup in 2020 with the import Mugatoo (IRE). The duo once again tasted success on Sunday when Almania (IRE) secured victory in the same prestigious race. Bred by Epsom Derby winner Australia, the progressive stayer Almania showcased his potential by surging past the competition to win by a convincing length and a half under jockey Dylan Gibbons.

Originally a 500,000 guineas purchase at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Almania was later acquired by Australian Bloodstock as a tried horse. X- Factor Colt SET FOR BIG FUTURE

Its not everyday you can “invest” into a Blue Blood Colt that not only has the looks- the athletic grace and the pedigree of a champion but that’s exactly what Australian Bloodstock has managed to do at the Magic Millions January Yearling Sold.

This colt hails from an exceptionally bred Darley/Godolphin mare in DISPUTES who herself was a proven Group 1 Performer and Stakes Winner . A winner of the Reginald Allen Disputes was a mare of rare talent. On debut she ran 3 ^rd in the time honoured Gimcrack Stakes- the best pre Christmas 2yr old race for fillies in the land. On that day she ran into two freakish talented horses in Defiant Dame and Hallowell Bell. Given a short spell she then was produced in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes to be beaten just 1.5 lengths behind Altar and Pane in the Glass- two proven elite class horses.

From there she competed almost exclusively in Group company races running 5 ^th in both the Group 1 Sires and the Group 1 Thousand Guineas- both times unlucky in the run – not to mention she ran into Genuine Champions in Helmet and Atlantic Jewel

It was no surprise then to see her excel in the next stage of her career at stud. With 3 foals to race for 3 city winners- Disputes has proven she is capable of getting Elite horses herself having produced Group 2 Winner and Group 1 talented ASIAGO. In fact her 3 city winners she has thrown have between them won 15 races which is a testament to her and her progeny toughness

This Astern colt from Day 1 has had this X Factor and its interesting to hear the comments from those people who have had the most to do with him. Take for Example the comments of Toskana Lodge farm manager in well respected horseman KYLE WILCHER. MR Wilcher commented “ ive been lucky enough to handle a lot of good horses and from day 1 this colt has shown me characteristics that only the good ones do- His attitude is brilliant and whilst he has some “spunk about him” I think he thinks he knows he is good- he is certainly a lovely type and off the 120 horses on the farm I think he would probably be one of my favourites.

Raheen Stud owner and President of the Queensland Breeders Association Mr Basil Nolan said “ we sell and get to handle a lot of horses each year and I remember this horse well because he was just so professional and did everything so well during the sales preparation- I remember thinking he would make a lot more than he ended up making but I think that was more a result of what time he went through the ring rather than there being anything wrong with him- to me his the type of horse that wouldn’t surprise me if he went on and had a 5 year plus race track career as he was always so sensible and he just gave me the impression he was a horse who knew he was good”

We spoke to one of the men behind his mating in Mr Barley Ward-Thomas from Darley/Godolphin and what inspired him to mate the mare to Astern. Mr Ward- Thomas Said- “ we are big believers in Astern and his results are excellent so we wanted to give him as good a mares as possible and the cross for us was so obvious as some absolute champions have been bred on a similar cross. Physically the mating worked very well and it was actually a simple decision to make. Astern can get you a very good 2 yr old but they also train on. I really liked disputes as a racehorse and now a mare as she puts a lot into her progeny and that is evident by the record of her progeny on the racetrack

This colt will be trained by Kris Lees and having seen him both at the sales and at the farm Kris had this to say “ I thought he was amazing value and was very surprised the boys got him at such a good price- I love these well bred horses and from what I see he is going to have every chance – I cant wait to give him a squeeze – id think he will be a good chance to run early so like everyone id hope we can get back to the Magic Millions if not next year for the next few years

He certainly has the X factor this colt and for 5% at $5235 he is going to be hopefully in time another bargain buy

OWNERS SET FOR A SMASHING TIME

LEADING Kembla Grange trainers Rob and Luke Price had never trained a horse for Australian Bloodstock until they bought a yearling bred by the leading Hunter syndicators.

That was at the Magic Millions sale at the Gold Coast last year when they paid $180,000 for a youngster by AB’S dual Group 1 winner and 2017 The Everest placegetter Brave Smash from the Street Cry mare Trick.

Even then, the Price boys probably didn’t even expect their purchase would race in the Australian Bloodstock colours.

He does, and at Kembla Grange on Saturday broke through for his first win in the $60,000 2YO Super Maiden Handicap (1400m).

With Robbie Downey aboard, Smashing Time ($3.80) at only his second start defeated $2.25 favorite Media World and Interjection ($3.70).

He had finished third on debut at $61 on the Kensington track over 1100m on March 27.

Australian Bloodstock principal Jamie Lovett has explained how they came to be involved in Smashing Time’s ownership after breeding and selling him.

“Smashing Time had chondritis (an inflammatory condition affecting the cartilages in the larynx) and couldn’t be scoped,” Lovett said.

“We knew it would clear up, and the Prices were happy to buy him.

“I ran into Rob at the Inglis Classic sale in Sydney the following month, and found out they hadn’t fully sold the horse.

“As the Prices were good enough to buy Smashing Time and also because we have a really good opinion of Brave Smash as a stallion, we bought back into him and got some friends and clients involved.

“Rob and Luke do a terrific job with their horses, and it’s great to be associated with them.”

Whilst immediate plans for Smashing Time are unclear, there is a chance he could go to Queensland for the winter carnival.

“He ran really well on debut in Sydney, finishing off strongly after racing wide,” Lovett said.

“The runner-up (Imperial Force) came out and bolted in at Canterbury last Wednesday, and the colt’s trainer Chris Waller is apparently looking at a Queensland campaign with him.”

Smashing Time was Rob and Luke Price’s 32nd winner of the season; 21 of which have been at the provincials.

Ucalledit Fills Last Spot In The Archer

KRIS Lees will have a third shot at winning regional Queensland’s richest race at Rockhampton on Sunday week.

Lees confirmed Ucalledit will be his representative in the $775,000 The Archer (1300m) at Callaghan Park, filling the last spot in the 12-horse field.

The Archer, introduced in 2022, is run along similar lines to The Everest – and also run at weight-for-age.

Ucalledit (61kg) was one of three Lees’ nominations for Saturday’s Benchmark 100 Handicap (1400m) at Royal Randwick – Kinloch (58kg) and Razeta (54kg) were the others – but will not be an acceptor.

“He will go to our Gold Coast stable later this week, and then go on to Rockhampton next week,” Lees said.

“Australian Bloodstock was keen to have a runner in the race.

“At this stage, we haven’t confirmed a rider for Ucalledit.”

Hunter syndicators Australian Bloodstock share a slot in The Archer with Rockhampton couple Ron and Jill Milne.

Lees has had two runners in each of both runnings of The Archer.

Gem Song (fifth) and Ventura Ocean (seventh) ran in Emerald Kingdom’s inaugural 2022 race, and Animate (sixth) and Gem Song (ninth) ran last year when Gold Coast-trained Alpine Edge beat the now retired Emerald Kingdom.

Former New Zealander Ucalledit, who has won 10 of his 30 starts, has never raced on Rockhampton’s spacious track, but is no stranger to Queensland.

He won three races in a row there toward the end of 2022, culminating with the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

The six-year-old gelding last winter won two 1400m Listed races at Royal Randwick – the Civic Stakes and Winter Stakes.

HORSE CONNECTIONS AND THE HAIL MARY GAMBLE

Hold Your Horses!

With the recent announcement that Johnny Rocker has been given what has to be a world record 31 rating points by the handicapper recently, I thought I would go back and look at a few horses that you could argue have been absolutely SLAUGHTERED by their connections in the last 10 years or so.

As a rule, most connections – whether owners or trainers – know the rules and hence play by them accordingly, but I thought it was interesting to see what happens to those who defy the said rules and see how they perform.

While I'm sure there have been many others, the ones I can remember are as follows. And while only the future will tell us, it would seem the likes of Territory Express and Johnny Rocker might need to certainly enjoy their recent “success” as history would prove that the good times are certainly not only against them but most probably behind them.

One only has to listen to Chris Waller to understand not only does he have the horse's best interest at heart, but he also understands the rules and then looks to manage his horses to maximize those advantages, and he does so with amazing skill. This, as a result, helps maximize his owners' earnings. When you listen to Chris, he talks about the horses having confidence and how he likes them to take little steps up the scale, which in turn builds the horse into a money-making machine. And this is only done by knowing and taking advantage of the benchmark system.

Perhaps the best trainer I have ever seen do this is Kris Lees. Some of the horses he has produced not only won eye-watering amounts of money but also done so by manipulating and understanding the rules of the benchmark system. Whether it be a Group 1 horse like Mugatoo or a limited horse, no one does it better than Kris. Even if we look at some of his country-grade inmates, they have seemingly overperformed thanks largely not only to his training ability and skill but by his skill at placing them to advantage. And getting back to the Chris Waller theory, these horses not only develop confidence but they also always seemingly overachieve.

But what happens to horses when you say, “Stuff that, I'm going for the Big Time”?

Below is a list of horses that I can think of that fit that category:

Beau Rossa : Beau Rossa was the first horse who came to mind when all the talk about Johnny Rocker first came to light this week with his rating. Trained by Will Clarken, Beau Rossa had the enviable record of 11 starts, 5 wins, and 3 placings – having won $390,465. At the time, he was rated 92, but instead of continuing to massage the horse in the right races, the connections decided to have a “SHOT AT THE STUMPS” and run him in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes. ON this day, he ran a cracking race to run second and pocket connections who were, I'd guess, on top of the world, picking up another $180,000, and surely the future was bright, right?? WRONG. Having raced the horse out of its grade, its rating skyrocketed to 107 – and then in the horse's 10 subsequent runs, it hasn’t even run in the top 3. It has won $80,000 in those 10 starts, but it must be said most of those earnings would have been “EATEN UP” in starter fees. Its biggest cheque was a $27,000 return running 7th in Ascot (yes, it couldn’t even run well in Perth!), $20,000 for Running 7th in Rupert Clarke – yes, 7th! and then $10,000 for running in the Magic Millions race (where it costs you $10k to enter). Beau Rossa had its last start in December 2023, and ran 6th, and yet somehow in the handicapper's mind, he is still a rating 98 horse. So in 3 years of racing, the horse has lost 9 ratings points (4 of them occurred recently). It's worth pointing out that the Group 1 Race where his rating exploded has since provided 5 individual winners from 108 starters – hardly the type of race that was one for the ages, and arguably you could argue it wasn’t a legitimate Group 1.

So who is wrong here? Is it the connections or the handicapper?

In my opinion, the first error was from the trainer – to have a promising horse like this – arguably before he got to Group 1 level he could have easily won another 2-3 races for connections and certainly a lot more than the $260k the horse has earned since that fateful decision. But the second error has to be with “THE SYSTEM”. I personally think connections should be encouraged to “have a go” without the worry that they will destroy their horse's future like has happened here. However, whilst handicappers are desperate to hang onto the tradition and myth that a certain race is “GOOD”, how can a horse like this race 10 future times – not get close to winning a race and still be rated 98? In a world where so much is made of animal welfare but also trying to keep connections engaged – this “SYSTEM” is doing the exact opposite. The horse is not being looked after, running it in races where it's getting its heart broken time after time, and I'd dare say if you asked connections if they knew now what they know would eventuate that they certainly might have made different decisions.

Let's look at another case:

Invictus Prince: We all remember him – he was this horse who came from Europe from left field and one day somehow turns up in a Group 1 race and runs into the mighty Winx – pushing her the whole way to win $94,000. Prior to this, he was a 17 start – 2 wins- 6 placings horse. So, an honest performer but hardly a Group 1 horse. His effort he produced in the Group 1 Winx stakes as a Benchmark 77 horse and at $151/1 running second to Winx and pockets $94,000. In 15 subsequent starts over the next 3 years, this horse went 15 starts or 1 second placing and earning just a further $56,300 in earnings. His last run was late in 2021, 3 years later running 11th of 11th in a midweek race as an $81 chance.

Do you think that one race was worth what happened for the next 3 years? I can assure you that $94,000 earned was certainly eaten up very quickly in “big race entries”.

Wild Chap: Who could forget this horse - Trained by Brett Lazzarini - a surprise winner of the Newcastle Cameron Handicap at least he won the race he was put in. Wild Chap Prior to Newcastle had 33 starts for 5 wins and 12 placings and $248,000. Since winning the $110,000- back September 2022-he skyrocketed from 79 to 95 in a handicap - Since that time he has had 13 starts for 0 wins, 0 seconds, and 1 third – earning just $42,000 - his last start was September running 6th of 10 in the Horsham Cup.

Whilst these three are obviously a “sad tale” to read about (even sadder if you are an owner), we have three horses who have been “aggressively placed and therefore punished”, all about to race over the coming weeks. It will be interesting to follow their progress as they attempt to defy the odds that master trainers like Chris Waller and Kris Lees have so successfully managed.

The three horses I talk about are:

Globe: In the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr Yard, this inmate has had just five career starts for four wins. But it’s the placement of the horse and subsequent handicap rating that has raised eyebrows. After winning his first two starts at Pakenham, he was then put into city racing, which he handled well, and he left that race behind him with an aggressively rated BM of 73 and had career earnings of $73,000. Certainly a great start to life as a horse and owner with an undefeated record and nice money in the account. However, it was what happened next that was certainly “interesting”. Having never won a Saturday grade race, he was then thrust into a BM 100 and duly saluted, taking his record to 4 from 4 and adding another $82,500 to the account. While that is great – the horse was “hammered” by the handicapper, going straight up to a Benchmark 90. So not only did he win a race and go up 17 points, arguably the horse lost the best part of $240,000 in future earnings having skipped so many grades. Now because he is a higher rated horse, he is thrust into the deep end of Group 1 racing and in that race was beaten a lazy 32.5 lengths to run an inglorious 13 of 13. Sent to the paddock since then – only time will tell if he can defy the big ratings jump and continue to earn for his connections or if he is a horse destined for the handicapping “victim” scrap heap.

Territory Express: Trained by Paul Niceforo, having won super impressively at Kembla in a restricted provincial race, he had a handicap of 75. He was in the $1m final for the Provincial Championship and certainly looking like one to beat. But then strangely, the connections elected to take on the Group Ajax field where he flashed home again (again ran second) and picked up $56,000. Unfortunately, he also picked up 20 ratings points and skyrocketed to BM 95. Whilst he is going great, if you are thinking about horses with this rating, even his owners would have to acknowledge he doesn’t have BM 95 credentials. Therefore, going forward, this horse is almost “caste” as he will be forced to race at Group 1-2-3 level and you could argue he will struggle to win too much more, despite that “fluke run in the Ajax”. For connections of Territory Express, his big hope, thanks to the conditions of the race, is the provincial championship and thankfully for them, he has been able to win that race being thrown in under the conditions of the race being basically a Set Weights and Penalties race. But in terms of a long-term future, he certainly has to defy history and whilst I’m sure they will be full of hope, this horse has a very large mountain to climb to recoup some of that lost money the connections have unknowingly lost.

Johnny Rocker: Strangely of the lot, this bloke is the only colt – and whilst they were so close to a “big collect”, can Johnny Rocker defy the ratings and go on and at least pay his way? Time will tell, but given the lack of depth in the Mooney Valley race and now having to live with a Benchmark 107, you would suggest he looks destined to go down in history as another victim of over-ambitious connections.

Let's watch on over the next few months and see if any of these three can defy the handicapper and best of luck to the connections; they are certainly going to need it.

Sydney Cup chances excite Lovett

While the future of Australian Bloodstock's flagship stayer Gold Trip is still being assessed, Jamie Lovett is eagerly awaiting Saturday's Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick with star staying pair Ashrun and Glentaneous.

Lovett said Gold Trip is still being rehabbed under the careful tuition of Ciaron Maher and a decision on his future will be made in the next month after the 2022 Melbourne Cup winner suffered a tendon injury in mid-March when he was being prepared for the Australian Cup.

According to Lovett, Australian Bloodstock has 'two live chances' in the Sydney Cup in the form of the recent Pakenham Cup quinella.

Maher-trained Ashrun subsequently finished third in the G1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill on March 30, while Glentaneous finished sixth in the Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington on the same afternoon.

Ashrun returned to racing last spring after being out for three years and he showed his talent with a fourth placing in the Melbourne Cup, with Lovett saying he had held that form and the camp is very pleased with his Tancred run.

"He came out of the Tancred run without a problem and he'll go to the Sydney Cup and Craig Williams will ride," Lovett said.

"It's been an amazing comeback supervised by Ciaron and he's a proven two-miler. He and More Felons deserve to be the two favourites."

Lovett said Glentaneous, who is trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, shouldn't be overlooked either.

"We thought he ran well in the Roy Higgins. He was ridden a bit closer in the run and he's a better horse ridden cold," he said.

"In the Sydney Cup he will be ridden where he can be comfortable and he'll settle out the back. If he's ridden that way, two miles should suit him.

"He'll be ridden by Jamie Kah and he has only 50 kilos. I think we've got two live hopes."

Vale Brave Mead

Budding star sprinter Brave Mead has been euthanised after suffering a 'catastrophic' injury at trackwork in Sydney on Tuesday.

The last-start Listed Darby Munro Stakes winner was being prepared for Saturday's Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) at Randwick when the incident occurred.

"He had a catastrophic injury this morning and he's been euthanised," confirmed a devastated Jamie Lovett from Australian Bloodstock.

"He shattered a sesamoid bone. He's been a fantastic horse for his owners and a really good advertisement for the stallion (Brave Smash). It's just terrible news."

Brave Mead had won five of his 12 starts for earnings of almost $700,000. He was a Listed juvenile winner of the St Albans Stakes (1200m) at The Valley and as a three-year-old added the G3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and the Listed Darby Munro to his record.

Prized imports ready to debut

Australian Bloodstock will soon showcase two of its prized imports ahead of important Group 1 autumn targets, with both New Energy and Berkshire Shadow poised for their first Australian runs.

Jamie Lovett said on Tuesday that former Irish horse New Energy is set to kick-off his career Down Under in the G3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday, with Berkshire Shadow to have his first run a week later in the G3 Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (1400m) at Flemington.

"I can't wait," Lovett enthused. "They have trialled up nicely, although they have taken a while to come to hand.

"Obviously, we brought them out over the spring and we've been very patient with them and they took a while to acclimatise and to adapt to Ciaron's (Maher) training methods.

"I think New Energy is in a really good spot at the moment, he's still not quite there at the moment so it won't shock me if he needs a couple of runs, but I think a light little prep in the autumn and we'll be right on track for the spring in Melbourne.

"I've been really pleased with what I've seen over the last couple of weeks. His action looks really good.

"The way they have trialled up, I would be disappointed if they did not both run really well. Whether they can win or not first time off long breaks and as we know, match day is a bit different, but from what they've shown in their gallops, you'd think they will show up.

"I think they are both Group 1 horses in the making. They will certainly be competitive at that level."

New Energy will carry a domestic rating of 101 into his race on Saturday on the back of some strong three-year-old form in Europe, highlighted by his second placing in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas as a $41 chance.

Berkshire Shadow has a 106 rating, with his most recent campaign last year resulting in a third in the G1 Lockinge Stakes (1600m) at Newbury, followed by a close-up fifth in the G1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Ascot.

Ashrun Breaks Drought

Australian Bloodstock scored the quinella in a fiercely run Pakenham Cup on Friday night, as Ashrun stormed to his first victory in 1231 days.

The Ciaron Maher-trained import, who ran fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, was the subject of a big late betting push, going from $3.80 to a $2.90 favourite in the hours leading up to the Listed 2500-metre contest.

Ashrun ended up a long way off the speed down the back straight, as leader Major Beel ($12) set some lightning-quick sectionals for the first half of the race, going three seconds quicker than standard time approaching the final bend.

Mark Zahra got the gelding travelling with a weaving run up the inside rail, and when he hit clear air at the 350m mark, it was obvious something special would need to occur for him to get beaten. “He deserved that win, he’s an old horse who’s had a few problems,” he said.

“Ciaron’s done a great job for him to be as competitive as he is with so many problems… good win, geez he won easy in the end.

“It was a brutally run race, but he just went to sleep on the rail, we just needed a bit of room and then it was over.”

He thinks a Group 1 Sydney Cup tilt in April would be a wholly worthwhile endeavour.

“I don’t think he’d have to improve much, that was 58kg and he was only second-up, so you’d think there would still be a bit of improvement to come,” he said.

“Ciaron’s just got him flying, he’s eight years old and he let go a lot better than he did when I rode him in the Geelong Cup (last year.

“So a Sydney Cup would be on the cards for sure.”

The final margin was just under two lengths, with fellow Australian Bloodstock runner Glentaneous ($3.80) running on strongly for second.

But Zahra said Ashrun, who was off the track for nearly three years with a tendon injury between 2020 and 2023, was doing it easily on Friday, even with the hot speed up front.

Glentaneous roll continues in Bagot Handicap

Emerging stayer Glentaneous could hit the road on the hunt for autumn riches after his dominant Bagot Handicap win at Flemington on New Year's Day.

Melbourne Cup-winning trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman claimed another feature success at Flemington when Glentaneous handled a sharp rise in class from his last-start win in a Benchmark 78 win at The Valley.

Glentaneous raced below his best in his maiden Australian campaign earlier this year but the import has improved sharply in his second local preparation.

"He's had a couple of niggling issues in behind that have just held him up getting to the races," Freedman Racing Manager Brad Taylor said.

"He had another break and the team have done an outstanding job this preparation at both Pinecliff and Flemington.

"We've got those issues under control now and we always thought he was a progressive stayer."Taylor said Glentaneous could find himself in Group races in Sydney and Adelaide during the autumn months.

"Once he ran second first-up at Sandown, Sam said ‘let's target the Bagot'," Taylor said.

"We worked back from there and the plan has come off.

"He's a horse that we've always thought an Adelaide Cup might be a nice target for him.

"These Europeans, they can tick over for a long time so we can just get him down to the farm and just tinker away with him.

"The way he won here today, he might be good enough for a Sydney Cup.

"We'll get him home now and have a look at him."

Taylor said the fact jockey Damian Lane was happy to ride Glentaneous at 54kg boosted the camp's confidence in the Irish-bred stayer living up to his $2.70 quote in Monday's $200,000 assignment."Damian Lane has a good affinity with him now and he wanted to ride him at this weight," Taylor said.

"At this time of the year, he probably doesn't ride this weight so it was a good push for the horse and we were happy to have him on at that weight."

Meanwhile, the Mike Moroney-trained Not An Option overcame a weight disadvantage to win the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m).

Not An Option ($11) hit the lead in unison with Who Dares ($7.50) at the 200m before prevailing narrowly at the end of the $175,000 race despite giving the runner-up 4kg.

Kettle boils to end 834-day drought

Kettle Hill gave patient owners, including British trainer William Haggas, an early Christmas present with victory in the 2040m Benchmark 78 at The Valley, the import's first success in 834 days.

Kettle Hill had raced 10 times in Australia for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace without a win but a change of tactics and daring executive from Dylan Browne McMonagle ended the drought.

Much to the relief of Hong Kong-bound Eustace, having been on the receiving end of Haggas' abuse.

Eustace's father James, a retired Newmarket trainer, is close friends with Haggas."A bit of pressure on this horse, if you look at the ownership, a certain William Haggas is in it and I was getting a fair bit abused by him last week," Eustace said.

"Couldn't possibly have left without winning a race for him, I'm glad he kept the faith and Australian Bloodstock, not that we lost faith in any way but it's taken a while to learn how to ride him."

Eustace will finish up with the stable at the end of January to relocate to the Asian racing mecca.

The Melbourne Cup-winner credited Maher with the tactics change to help Kettle Hill succeed.

"Ciaron said to me after Flemington (two starts back) he ran well but didn't finish his race off, so he said let's just ride him dead cold and see how he runs, and he's done that twice," Eustace said.

"He was good at Ballarat but didn't settle quite as well, Dylan got him to relax beautifully, naturally needed luck today, but the horse was brave, the jockey was brave, and he got his head in front."

Browne McMonagle settled last in the run on Kettle Hill and nailed the rail-hugging ride, going around one horse only, leader and third-placed Samedi, to win from Starspangled Baby.

"I had plenty of horse which was a big help, this guy has been a little bit tricky," Browne McMonagle said.

"The key was just getting him to relax in his races and the last time I rode him (Ballarat) he did too much and he got there to win 200m out and he kind of fell apart and got a bit tired.

"I knew today if I could get him to miss the break and get him to relax, ride for luck and keep him covered up as best I could, I knew he would get to the line.

"He stays well but he just needs to help himself a bit early, hopefully he can progress now, he's a horse with a lot of ability."

Browne McMonagle welcomed a change of luck after his first ride on the card, short-priced favourite Dark Halo for Maher and Eustace reared as the barriers opened.

"He was as good as gold up until the second they opened and when they opened he got a bit of a fright and reared up," Browne McMonagle said.

"It was game over from there, you can't give away that much ground, I thought he did OK to get to where he did, his first run back he's going to improve.

"He's a gorgeous big horse, I think he's got a lot of ability as well."

Acquitted a Class Above in Bernborough

After taking twenty-six starts to open his stakes account, the Night Of Thunder (IRE) gelding Acquitted (IRE) has put two together following a dominant performance in Saturday’s Listed Channel 7 Bernborough Plate (1600m) at Eagle Farm.Ridden by James Orman for Kris Lees, Acquitted tracked the early pace but was in desperate need of a run at the 300m.

Orman found a narrow seam on the inside of Love Tap and when in fresh air, put the race to bed in quick time.

Coming off a win over Without Revenge in the Listed Tails Stakes at Doomben, Acquitted found the line strongly to again defeat Without Revenge (GB) (Muhaarar) by two- and three-quarter lengths with The Vowels (Better Than Ready) a half-head back in third.

“I wanted to ride him like a good thing and not trying to take miracle runs,” Orman said.

“He began so well, and I was a lot handier than I expected, but he is a horse that you must let do what he wants to do.

“We were in a nice spot but had Love Tap holding his spot on my outside, which he is entitled to do. I had to wait for him to drop off and squeeze through, and he was just too good. “I was lucky to have the horse under me to move when I wanted to move.

“He is a lovely horse to ride, and Kris has done a tremendous job with him.

“The sky is the limit with this horse.”

The 7-year-old gelding advances his record to six wins, five seconds and three thirds from 27 starts with earnings of $502,146.

He won three of eleven starts in Britain for Hugo Palmer before his purchase by Australian Bloodstock.

A €60,000 purchase for Avenue Bloodstock/Hugo Palmer from the Ballylinch Stud draft at the 2018 Goffs Orby Sale, Acquitted is the best of two winners from as many to race for the Authorized mare Blameless.

Unplaced in three starts in Ireland, Blameless is a half-sister to Group II winner Desert Fire (Cape Cross) and stakes-placed Criza (Smarty Jones) out of the Horse of the Year & Champion 3YO Filly in Chile in 1998-99, dual Group 1 winner, Crystal House (Golden Voyager).

A one season shuttler to Australia, Night Of Thunder stands at Darley’s Kildangan Stud, Ireland for €100,000.

Newcastle mates back Jock’s judgment one last time

When the news came that Newcastle clocker Alan “Jock″⁣ Gollogly had lost his long battle with cancer during the week, Australian Bloodstock boss Jamie Lovett opened his phone and looked at his messages.

Lovett, trainer Kris Lees and Gollogly spent many hours in the box at the top of the Newcastle grandstand in the mornings watching horses work, and when Lovett wasn’t there he trusted the eyes of the other two.

“He would always send me messages, and the last one before he went into hospital for the last time said ‘Rogue Bear Dream Hour going well at gallops’. It seems right that Rogue Bear will run in Jock’s race on Saturday,” Lovett said.

Dream Hour lived up to what Gollogly saw when he charged to victory in The Wave to earn Australian Bloodstock a Stradbroke spot in the former jockey’s old home of Brisbane. It is Rogue Bear’s turn tomorrow in the Vale Mr Alan ‘Jock’ Gollogly (1800m).

Lovett, Lees and a group of mates met at a Newcastle pub on Tuesday to tell Gollogly stories.

“Jock would love all this attention but would be a bit blown away by it as well,” Lovett said. “It is great to have a runner in the Jock Gollogly race at Randwick on Saturday and it would be more than special to win it for all of us. It is funny that this horse was in that message. Rogue Bear is a horse that has reached his right level and he is going to win at this level again, and Saturday would be the perfect time.”

The import has been in good form. He was runner-up in the Taree Cup, which makes him eligible for the Little Dance and maybe the Big Dance next year, and was a grinding third behind Kapakiri last Saturday.

Rogue Bear won three times in England before coming Down Under, and in his second preparation he appears to have acclimatised.

“We have gone for the quick back-up with him and put the blinkers on,” Lees said. “But I think the most vital thing for him is the three-kilo claim for Ben [Osmond] because he is not that big.

“We are looking to find a length or two, and he’s capable of doing that. I thought he was good last week but the big weight anchored him a bit late.

“We are just starting to get him up in trip, and I think he has a lot more to give at this time of year.”

Lees would love to honour his mate with victory on Saturday.

“I sat next to him for more than 20 years. It will be quieter without him around, and I will have to make sure I clock my horses,” Lees said. “Jock was one of a kind because he could mix with everyone and make them all feel special.

“It would be great to win his race.”

BLINKERS AND A CLAIM TO HELP ROGUE BEAR

KRIS Lees has left no stone unturned in a bid to win a race he dearly covets at Royal Randwick tomorrow.

He has opted for both an important claim along with blinkers on Australian Bloodstock import Rogue Bear in the Vale Alan “Jock” Gollogly Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m) – named in honour of his mate and clocker, who passed away earlier this week at 72 years of age after a brave battle with cancer.

Rogue Bear has drawn the rails, and stable apprentice Ben Osmond’s 3kg allowance lessens the gelding’s weight to 57.5kg.

“It certainly would be special to win Jock’s race,” Lees said this morning.

“The reason for putting blinkers on him is that he is backing up from last week and coming back from 2000m, and hits a flat spot at a vital stage.

“Hopefully, they can do the trick.”

Rogue Bear ran third to Kapakiri in the same grade at Randwick last Saturday with 60.5kg, after finishing a close second to Sound and Vision in the Big Dance eligible Taree Gold Cup (2000m) on November 19.

The six-year-old gelding, who won first-up at Taree over 1400m in October with Osmond aboard, is Lees’ sole runner at Randwick, and was a $9 fourth favorite with TAB.com.au this morning.

Meanwhile, another Australian Bloodstock import Acquitted is a dominant favorite to clinch a fourth Australian career victory in tomorrow’s Listed Bernborough Plate (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Acquitted’s three wins since joining Lees’ stable have been on heavy ground (twice) and the other on a soft track and, whilst a “Good 4” rating was posted this morning, further rain is forecast in Brisbane.

“Acquitted is in great order, and looks very well placed under the set weights conditions,” Lees said.

“He carried 59.5kg in winning the Listed Tails Stakes (1600m) on soft ground at Doomben three weeks ago, drops 2.5kg and has trained on well since.

“Acquitted has been placed on good ground, and obviously will be even harder to beat if the rain arrives.

“I will probably bring him home after tomorrow’s race.”

Leading Brisbane jockey James Orman rode Acquitted in his Doomben success, and stays with him for the Eagle Farm assignment.

Lees’ other Eagle Farm runners are Always On Show (Benchmark 78 Handicap, 1820m), and Animate and Willinga Freefall (Benchmark 85 Handicap, 1400m).

Andrew Mallyon rides both Always On Show and Willinga Freefall, whilst apprentice Cejay Graham has the mount on Animate.

“Always On Show was a touch disappointing last time when a well beaten third over 1600m at the Sunshine Coast, but gets to a more suitable distance and has drawn well in a capacity field,” Lees said.

“Animate will appreciate Cejay’s 2kg claim, and Willinga Freefall is facing a tougher task from an awkward draw than his latest easy win at Eagle Farm, but is very consistent.”

Lees runs Oakfield Wallaby (Grant Buckley) in the Provincial Benchmark 64 Handicap at tomorrow’s Wyong meeting.

He has won three from four starts since taking over the Dissident four-year-old’s preparation, and is kicking her off at 1600m.

“Oakfield Wallaby scored first-up for us over 1400m at Coffs Harbour in June, and has had two trials to get her ready to begin another campaign,” Lees said.

“She won up to 2200m last time, so the 1600m first-up isn’t a worry.”
